Aviva Investors has launched a tokenized share class of its £22 billion Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), marking a notable development in the adoption of blockchain technology by traditional asset managers.
The company has also committed £50 million to the new share class, demonstrating financial participation in the initiative.
The Aviva XRP Ledger tokenization initiative brings a portion of an established investment fund into a blockchain-based structure.
Tokenization involves representing ownership or other rights associated with financial assets through digital tokens recorded on a blockchain.
In this case, the tokens represent interests in a share class of Aviva’s Sterling Liquidity Fund.
The underlying fund has approximately £22 billion in assets, while the newly tokenized share class has received a £50 million investment from Aviva.
These figures refer to different things and should not be confused.
The announcement does not mean that the entire £22 billion fund has been transferred onto the XRP Ledger.
<h2 id="why-aviva-chose-xrp-ledger-for-tokenization">Why Aviva Chose XRP Ledger for Tokenization</h2>
The Aviva XRP Ledger tokenization launch reflects growing interest in using blockchain infrastructure to support traditional financial products.
The XRP Ledger is a public blockchain designed to support digital asset transactions and token issuance.
For asset managers, tokenization may offer opportunities to modernize how fund ownership is recorded and how transactions are processed.
Blockchain-based records can potentially support more efficient ownership tracking and integration with digital financial systems.
However, the practical benefits depend on how a tokenized fund is structured and operated.
Traditional investment funds remain subject to relevant legal, operational and regulatory requirements, even when their shares are represented on a blockchain.
The announcement does not specify whether the new share class will be available to retail investors or restricted to eligible institutional participants.
It also does not establish that tokenized fund shares will trade freely on public cryptocurrency exchanges.
Importantly, issuing fund tokens on XRPL does not mean that the £50 million investment was made in XRP tokens.

<h2 id="what-aviva-xrp-ledger-tokenization-means-for-finance">What Aviva XRP Ledger Tokenization Means for Finance</h2>
The launch adds to the broader movement toward tokenized real-world assets, commonly known as RWAs.
Financial institutions are exploring tokenization for products such as money market funds, bonds and other investment instruments.
The goal is often to combine established financial products with blockchain-based recordkeeping and transaction capabilities.
Aviva’s £50 million investment gives the new share class an initial financial commitment while connecting it to a much larger existing liquidity fund.
For the XRP Ledger ecosystem, the development represents another example of traditional financial assets being represented on-chain.
However, the announcement alone does not establish how much trading activity the tokenized share class will generate or whether it will affect XRP’s market price.
Future adoption will depend on investor demand, operational performance and the terms governing the fund.
For now, Aviva’s launch demonstrates how a major asset manager is introducing blockchain-based fund shares through XRP Ledger, beginning with a £50 million investment.
