Is Pyth Network still just a crypto price oracle? Its latest numbers suggest otherwise.
So, what is Pyth Network? It's a data network that carries prices from trading firms, exchanges and banks onto blockchains. Apps then use those prices to run trades, loans and tokenized assets.
The story has shifted lately. Pyth now sells market data by subscription, and its DAO has tied token buybacks to that income. This Pyth Network explained guide covers how it works, how it compares with Chainlink, what Pyth Pro does and what the PYTH token captures. It also flags the risks. Figures are current as of October 26, 2026.

What Is Pyth Network Solving? The Oracle Problem Explained

A smart contract is code that runs on a blockchain. It can't look outside the chain, so it doesn't know what Bitcoin trades at or what a Treasury yields.
That gap is the oracle problem. An oracle is a service that carries outside data onto a blockchain. Lending apps use it to value collateral, and perpetual futures platforms use it to settle trades.
One stale price can trigger unfair liquidations. So what is Pyth Network doing about it? Focusing on speed and source quality.

Pyth vs Chainlink: What Is Pyth Network Doing Differently?

Most oracles collect prices from third parties. Pyth's publishers are the firms that create prices: exchanges, trading firms and market makers. The project says more than 138 institutions publish to it, including Cboe, Coinbase and Revolut. That's what first-party oracles means in practice.
Chainlink works another way. Independent node operators fetch data from many providers, then agree on a result.

Chainlink secures roughly eleven times more value on public oracle rankings, so Pyth is the challenger.

How Does Pyth Network Work?

Wondering what is Pyth Network doing with each price? Four steps:

Publishers send signed prices to Pythnet, Pyth's own blockchain.

Pythnet blends them into one price with a confidence interval, a range showing how certain it is.

An app pulls the latest price only when it needs it.

Wormhole, a cross-chain messaging system, delivers it to the target chain for verification.

The project says core feeds update about every 400 milliseconds.

What Is Pyth Pro and How Do Its Treasury Feeds Fit In?

Pyth Pro is the paid institutional tier, launched in September 2025. Customers get streaming data through web APIs, not only smart contracts.
On October 8, Pyth reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $11.49 million at the end of the third quarter, up 86.5%. Pyth Pro made up $9.68 million and Pyth Indices $1.81 million, across 276 paid accounts.
So what is Pyth Network really selling here? Access to prices, packaged for software.
Pyth Pro now carries U.S. Treasury yield and price feeds from 2-year to 30-year maturities, supplied by institutions active in that market. Yield is the interest rate. Price is what the bond costs. They move in opposite directions, so desks need both.
Why should anyone asking what is Pyth Network care about bonds? Tokenized Treasury products need these prices for collateral and margin. It works like a Treasury benchmark for software. The official posts reviewed describe feeds, not a standalone Treasury index.

What Is Pyth Network Up Against in the Market-Data Industry?

Market data is the paid price feed behind every trading screen. The project says the industry is worth about $50 billion a year. Legacy vendors dominate it, with slow contracts and strict redistribution rules.
The project says Kalshi lists it as the sole data source for gold and silver perpetuals. Coinbase and Kraken use Pyth Indices, its 24/7 benchmarks for assets that stop trading overnight.
Still, $11.49 million is small against $50 billion. What is Pyth Network up against? Entrenched vendors and years of habit.

PYTH Token: Does It Have Utility, and What Does It Capture?

PYTH's total supply is fixed at 10 billion. The official docs say 1.5 billion circulated at launch, and the rest unlocks in stages at 6, 18, 30 and 42 months. Public trackers now show roughly 7.9 billion circulating.

Utility comes in three forms:

Governance: staked PYTH votes 1:1 on proposals.

Oracle Integrity Staking: publishers and delegators stake PYTH as collateral. Bad data can lead to slashing, where part of the stake is cut.

PYTH Reserve: the DAO uses product income to buy PYTH.

On October 8, the project announced OP-PIP-136, the 100% Rule. The DAO now sends all funds it receives from Pyth products into open-market PYTH purchases. The old rule moved one-third of the non-PYTH treasury monthly and needed a vote each time. Purchases under it fell from about 2.75 million PYTH to 669,662 over five months. The reserve holds roughly 41 million token. OurPyth news explainer covers the vote.
So what is Pyth Network really paying for with these buybacks? Only the DAO's share. The DAO gets 60% of Pyth Pro subscription revenue. Douro Labs, a core contributor, gets 40%. Buybacks aren't burns either, since bought tokens stay in the treasury.
Analyst view: the rule ties token demand to revenue more tightly. It only works if revenue keeps growing.

Before asking what is Pyth Network likely to do next, read the caveats:

ARR isn't cash. It's an annualized run-rate. One monthly DAO payout earlier this year was about $273,000, when ARR was lower.

Supply overhang. Market cap counts circulating tokens. Fully diluted value (FDV) counts all 10 billion.

No price floor. The reserve is held in PYTH, so its value falls with the token.

Competition. Chainlink is far larger, and legacy vendors won't cede ground quietly.

Self-reported figures. Most commercial numbers come from the project.

The Metrics That Matter If You Follow Pyth Network

If you keep asking what is Pyth Network becoming, watch these:

Paid accounts and net new ARR each quarter.

Feed count (above 3,500 in the July report) and publisher count (138+).

Reserve balance, checked against on-chain records.

Share of real-world-asset (RWA) perpetual volume using Pyth data, near 94% for the third quarter, per the project.

The Bottom Line: What Is Pyth Network Now?

What is Pyth Network now? A first-party price network turning into a market-data business. The revenue growth and the 100% Rule stand out. What's uncertain is scale, since $11.49 million is small, and how much reaches token buyers. Check the Reserve records and the next quarterly update.
