Crypto commentator John Squire (@TheCryptoSquire) recently shared a video of Ripple co-founder and executive Chris Larsen presenting on XRP’s role in global payments.
In the clip, Larsen walks through exactly how XRP functions as a bridge asset between currencies, and why that design addresses a longstanding problem in international finance.

Moving money across borders has historically required banks to hold large amounts of pre-funded capital in foreign accounts. That capital sits idle, ties up resources, and adds cost. Larsen’s presentation laid out how Ripple built xRapid, a component of RippleNet, to solve that directly.
“It allows payment providers to lower the cost of liquidity for their global payments,” Larsen said.

THIS IS WHY XRP MATTERS!
A Ripple presentation demonstrated how XRP could provide liquidity for cross-border transactions between major banks.
Instead of locking up enormous amounts of capital in advance, XRP could serve as a bridge asset.

How the Process Works

Larsen gave an example. A customer visits a remittance company in the United States. The company converts those dollars into XRP through Bittrex, an exchange. XRP settles the transaction in seconds. On the other end, Bitso, an exchange operating in Mexico, converts XRP into Mexican pesos.
A Mexican bank then receives the funds and deposits them into the customer’s account through Mexico’s real-time payment system. The entire process, according to Larsen, takes one to two minutes. Traditional cross-border transfers can take days. This system solves a real problem for banks.
Banks that use older methods often charge customers for settlement risk, even when the transfer appears faster on the surface. “This now allows payment providers, banks, and their customers to move value in one to two minutes versus days,” Larsen said.

XRP’s Role as a Bridge Currency

A key detail in Larsen’s explanation is that banks do not need to hold XRP themselves. The asset functions as a bridge currency that enables conversion between two fiat currencies without requiring direct liquidity between them. The bank sends dollars, XRP handles the bridge, and pesos arrive on the other side.
That design reduces the capital requirements for financial institutions participating in cross-border transactions. It replaces the need for nostro and vostro accounts, which are pre-funded accounts banks maintain in foreign currencies to facilitate international transfers.

Why Squire Highlighted the Video

Squire shared the clip with the caption, “This technology was designed to solve a real financial problem.” His post emphasized that XRP’s use case is not speculative. The infrastructure Larsen described in the presentation exists to address inefficiencies that financial institutions deal with in real payment flows.
The presentation shows Ripple’s stated intent from the beginning. XRP was built to move value quickly and cheaply between currencies at a global scale.
