Billionaire venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya has issued a long-term warning that artificial intelligence could eventually compromise Bitcoin's cryptographic security and send its price to zero, a prediction that puts one of Silicon Valley's most prominent investor voices on record against the asset he once publicly backed.
The warning is a forward-looking opinion, not a report of an existing breach. No current hack of the Bitcoin network has been confirmed, and Palihapitiya's statement represents a speculative scenario tied to the future trajectory of AI capabilities rather than any identified vulnerability present today.

What Chamath Palihapitiya Said About AI and Bitcoin

Palihapitiya, the Social Capital founder known for early calls on both technology stocks and digital assets, said he believes AI advancement could eventually enable actors to crack the cryptographic primitives that underpin Bitcoin's security model. His stated end scenario: Bitcoin's value falls to zero.
The claim centers on a long-duration threat, not an imminent one. Palihapitiya is arguing that the computational power AI systems could marshal in the future may be sufficient to defeat the elliptic curve cryptography and SHA-256 hashing that secure Bitcoin wallets and transaction validation. This is a hypothesis about eventual capability, not a present-day attack vector.
Palihapitiya's position on Bitcoin has shifted considerably over time. Earlier forecasts from the same investor projected dramatically higher prices; a prior prediction that Bitcoin would reach $1.14 million placed him firmly in the long camp. His AI-hack scenario represents a meaningful reversal in that framing, conditioning Bitcoin's long-term survival on whether its cryptography can withstand increasingly capable machine intelligence.

Why an AI Hack Would Matter for Bitcoin

Bitcoin's value proposition rests almost entirely on the assumption that its cryptographic security is computationally infeasible to defeat. If that assumption fails, the consequences for price discovery would be immediate and severe. A credible demonstration that private keys could be derived from public addresses would trigger a rational exit from the entire asset class, not merely a price correction.
The "go to zero" outcome Palihapitiya describes is logically consistent with this threat model. A successful compromise of Bitcoin's signing scheme would allow an attacker to drain any wallet whose public key is exposed on-chain, which includes every address that has ever made an outgoing transaction. The scale of that exposure would be systemic, not isolated, an important distinction from conventional exchange hacks where losses are bounded by custodied assets. For a real-world example of the market reaction to even a suspected security event, the response to India's largest exchange denying a hack amid $16 million in suspicious outflows illustrates how quickly confidence can erode around security narratives.
The conditional language Palihapitiya used matters here. "Eventually" and "could" signal a probabilistic, long-horizon view, not a near-term trade thesis. The prediction requires sustained AI progress on a trajectory that produces systems capable of breaking 256-bit elliptic curve cryptography, a bar that current quantum computing and AI research has not approached.

How Investors Can Read Palihapitiya's Bitcoin Warning

Separating the source from the substance is essential when evaluating this forecast. Palihapitiya carries weight as a technology investor and former early Bitcoin advocate, which means his warning generates attention that outlasts its technical specificity. The prediction does not include a timeline, a named vulnerability, a specific AI architecture, or a mechanism by which the attack would be executed.
Counter-perspectives exist within the same investor class. The Coinbase CEO has publicly argued that the AI boom will not crash Bitcoin, addressing the intersection of the two technologies from a defensive posture. Bitcoin's development community has also discussed post-quantum cryptographic upgrades as a long-run protocol consideration, suggesting that the network's security model is not static.
Palihapitiya himself has maintained parallel exposure to technology-adjacent financial structures. His $250 million SPAC focused on AI and DeFi positions him as an investor with active interests in both the AI development trajectory he sees as a Bitcoin threat and the decentralized finance infrastructure that would be disrupted by such an outcome.
Crypto markets are historically sensitive to narrative. A high-profile prediction from a credible technology investor, even one framed as a long-duration scenario with no specified timeline, can influence sentiment and short-term positioning. Readers evaluating this warning should weigh it as a speculative risk scenario from a single source, not as evidence of a present or near-term compromise of Bitcoin's network security. Those tracking long-term institutional positioning on Bitcoin price trajectories can cross-reference assessments like the Bitcoin path to $500K supported by institutional figures against Palihapitiya's downside scenario to calibrate the spread of opinion among sophisticated investors.
No verified technical evidence supporting Palihapitiya's specific AI-hack mechanism was available at time of publication. The prediction stands as a stated opinion from a notable investor, notable for its severity and its source, but not yet grounded in disclosed technical research or named vulnerability data.
