Coinbase is set to halt all transfers of GYEN, the GMO Trust-issued yen-pegged stablecoin, on October 26, after which any remaining user balances will be automatically converted to USDC at prevailing market rates. The move ends the exchange's support for one of the few yen-denominated stablecoins available to U.S. retail traders, and forces holders to act before the deadline or accept a conversion they cannot control.

What Coinbase announced about the GYEN transfer halt and USDC conversion

According to reporting by CryptoSlate, Coinbase will suspend GYEN transfer functionality on October 26. The suspension covers inbound and outbound transfers, meaning users will be unable to move GYEN off the platform once the cutoff takes effect. For related coverage, see Future Leaders Awards & Conference 2026 to Bring Global Business and Technology Leaders to Singapore on 2–3 November.

Balances remaining in user accounts after the halt will be converted to USDC. Coinbase has specified the conversion will occur at market rates, not a fixed peg or guaranteed 1:1 redemption value. The distinction matters: GYEN's peg to the Japanese yen means its USD value fluctuates with the USD/JPY exchange rate, so the conversion price will depend on where that rate sits at the moment Coinbase executes the swap.
GYEN has a history that makes this announcement significant beyond routine asset delistings. The token suffered a severe depeg event shortly after its 2021 Coinbase listing, briefly surging hundreds of percent above its intended yen parity before collapsing, an incident that triggered investor lawsuits against both GMO Trust and Coinbase. The exchange is now formally exiting its relationship with the asset years after that episode.
What market-rate conversion means for GYEN holders in practice

A market-rate conversion is not the same as a guaranteed fixed redemption. Coinbase will execute the GYEN-to-USDC swap at whatever price GYEN trades at the time of conversion, which is itself a function of the yen's value against the dollar. Holders who remain passive and allow the automatic conversion bear the exchange-rate risk of the JPY/USD pair at that moment.

Holders who want to avoid the automatic conversion and manage their own exit have a narrow window. The October 26 transfer halt is the hard stop; any GYEN that needs to move to an external wallet or be sold on another venue must clear before that date. After the halt triggers, Coinbase controls both the timing and the execution price of the forced conversion.

This operational structure places GYEN in a similar category to exchange-level stablecoin decisions where the platform, not the token's issuer or a governance vote, determines the final terms for users with residual balances. There is no on-chain mechanism here; the conversion will happen within Coinbase's centralized custody system.

Key dates and what to monitor before October 26

The only confirmed date in Coinbase's announcement is October 26 for the transfer halt. The exchange has not publicly specified an exact time on that date for the cutoff, nor has it released a detailed fee schedule or eligibility carve-outs for the conversion. Users should check Coinbase's official support pages and account notices directly for any updates to those terms before the deadline.

Two things are worth tracking between now and October 26: any shift in the USD/JPY rate, which will directly determine the USDC value of any converted GYEN balance, and whether Coinbase publishes a more precise conversion schedule. The yen has been volatile against the dollar over recent months, so even a modest currency move in the days around the conversion could meaningfully affect the USDC amount holders receive.

Coinbase's GYEN action also coincides with a broader period of scrutiny over stablecoin asset management on centralized exchanges. Earlier this month, on-chain flows to Coinbase have drawn attention from analysts monitoring institutional custody patterns, illustrating how the exchange's operational decisions carry weight beyond individual asset delistings.

GYEN transfers on Coinbase halt on October 26; move funds off-platform before that date if you do not want an automatic conversion.

Remaining GYEN balances will be converted to USDC by Coinbase after the halt; users do not choose the timing or execution price.

The conversion rate is market-based, tied to the USD/JPY exchange rate at the time of execution, not a fixed peg redemption.

Coinbase has not issued public guidance on what happens to GYEN balances that are below minimum conversion thresholds, if any such threshold exists. Holders with small positions should confirm with Coinbase support whether those balances are treated identically to larger ones under the forced-conversion policy.
