Coinbase has announced it will halt all transfers of GYEN, the Japanese yen-pegged stablecoin, on October 26, 2026, and will subsequently convert any remaining user balances into USD Coin (USDC) at prevailing market rates, according to the exchange's official notice.

Coinbase Sets Oct. 26 Halt for GYEN Transfers

The announced action affects holders of GYEN, a stablecoin designed to track the value of the Japanese yen, on the Coinbase platform. As of October 26, the exchange will no longer process inbound or outbound GYEN transfers, effectively closing off any movement of the token in or out of user accounts.
Transfer Halt Comes Before Balance Conversion

The transfer halt and the balance conversion are two distinct steps in Coinbase's wind-down of the asset. The October 26 date marks the cutoff for transfers; the conversion of remaining GYEN balances into USDC follows that date, according to Coinbase's support documentation for the asset. Holders who want to exit GYEN on their own terms should act before the transfer window closes.
Coinbase's move to delist GYEN follows years of turbulence around the token. Reporting from CryptoSlate notes that GYEN previously experienced a significant price crash on the exchange that led to investor lawsuits, making this delisting the conclusion of a prolonged and contentious chapter for the token on the platform. The exchange's regulatory environment has also grown increasingly scrutinized, with broader stablecoin oversight guidance from regulators such as the New York DFS placing heightened expectations on exchanges handling non-dollar-pegged stable assets.

Remaining GYEN Balances Will Be Converted to USDC at Market Rates

After the transfer halt takes effect, Coinbase will automatically convert any GYEN still held in user accounts into USDC. The exchange has described the conversion basis as market rates, meaning the amount of USDC a holder receives will reflect the exchange rate between GYEN and USDC at the time the conversion is executed. For related coverage, see ESGNext Awards & Conference – Virtual 2026: Global ESG Leaders Convene Online to Advance Sustainable Business.

Market-Rate Conversion Is Not a Fixed One-to-One Exchange

A market-rate conversion differs from a fixed redemption at par. Because GYEN tracks the yen and USDC tracks the dollar, the conversion ratio depends on the prevailing yen-to-dollar exchange rate at the moment Coinbase processes the swap. Holders will not necessarily receive a round-number USDC equivalent; the output will fluctuate based on currency markets at conversion time. Coinbase has not disclosed a specific spread, fee, or timing window for when the conversion will be executed after the October 26 halt.

Coinbase's decision to settle balances in USDC rather than a fiat payout keeps the process entirely on-platform and aligns with the exchange's broader push toward USDC adoption across its ecosystem, a strategy it has reinforced through multiple product integrations this year. The SEC's recent engagement with Coinbase's operating metrics and product filings underscores the regulatory backdrop against which these stablecoin decisions are being made.

What GYEN Holders Should Watch Before the Change

With fewer than four days remaining before the October 26 cutoff, GYEN holders on Coinbase have a narrow window to act. Any user who wants to transfer GYEN off the platform, convert it manually, or take any other independent action with the asset must do so before the transfer halt activates.

Date-Focused Checklist for Holders

Holders should review their current GYEN balance and confirm whether any pending transfers or trades are scheduled before October 26. If a user prefers a different exit currency than USDC, they should execute that conversion manually before the deadline rather than waiting for Coinbase's automatic swap. Coinbase has advised users to check their official account notices for any operational details that may not be captured in the announcement summary; specifics around exact conversion timing and any applicable fees should be verified directly with Coinbase's support pages before the cutoff.

The GYEN wind-down is one of several stablecoin-related operational adjustments playing out across major exchanges as regulators sharpen their focus on non-dollar pegged assets and exchange liability for depeg events. Earlier moves by institutional players routing significant crypto volumes through Coinbase have amplified the scrutiny on how the exchange manages its listed asset pool. For GYEN holders specifically, the practical priority between now and October 26 is straightforward: decide before the transfer window closes, because after that date, the exit terms are set by Coinbase, not by the holder.
