Coinbase will halt all transfers of GYEN, a Japanese yen-pegged stablecoin, on October 26, 2026, and will convert any remaining user balances into USD Coin (USDC) at prevailing market rates. The move affects Coinbase account holders who currently hold GYEN and leaves them with a narrow window to act before the conversion takes place automatically.

GYEN is a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen and issued by GMO Trust, a New York-chartered limited purpose trust company. Unlike dollar-denominated stablecoins such as USDC, GYEN tracks the value of Japan's currency, meaning its USD equivalent fluctuates with the yen-dollar exchange rate. Coinbase has announced that transfer functionality for GYEN will be disabled beginning October 26. After that date, users will no longer be able to send or receive GYEN through their Coinbase accounts. The exchange has not publicly stated a specific reason for the change, and no official rationale has been confirmed at the time of publication. According to reporting by CryptoSlate, the decision comes years after GYEN suffered a significant price crash on Coinbase that led to investor lawsuits. That prior incident drew attention to the risks of listing non-dollar stablecoins, which can experience sharp USD-denominated moves during periods of currency volatility.
For Bitcoin holders accustomed to sovereign-currency risk, the GYEN episode illustrates a structural point: stablecoins denominated in fiat currencies other than the dollar carry dual-layer exposure, to the issuer's redemption mechanism and to the underlying fiat's own monetary policy. The Bank of Japan's decade-long yield curve control experiment has made the yen one of the most policy-sensitive major currencies globally.

How Remaining GYEN Balances Will Be Converted to USDC

Coinbase has indicated that any GYEN balances still held in user accounts after the transfer halt will be converted to USDC at market rates. The exchange has not specified an exact conversion rate, a fixed execution price, or the precise methodology it will apply to determine the market rate at the time of conversion.
This distinction matters. A market-rate conversion is not a peg-based exchange. Because GYEN's USD value reflects the current yen-dollar spot rate, the USDC amount a holder receives will depend on where that rate stands at the moment Coinbase executes the conversion, not on any fixed or historical ratio. Holders who prefer to control the timing and rate of their exit should act before October 26 rather than relying on the automatic conversion.
USDC, the stablecoin Coinbase will use for the conversion, is issued by Circle and is pegged one-to-one to the US dollar. It operates under a framework broadly aligned with guidance from New York's Department of Financial Services, which has published stablecoin guidance requiring dollar-backed reserves held in segregated accounts. The switch from a yen-pegged asset to a dollar-pegged one effectively removes the foreign exchange variable for affected holders.
Coinbase has previously navigated regulatory scrutiny across multiple jurisdictions. A Kazakhstan court injunction targeted Coinbase alongside five other crypto platforms, and the exchange has faced ongoing compliance demands in various markets. The GYEN wind-down fits a broader pattern of exchanges reducing exposure to assets with complex regulatory or liquidity profiles.

What Affected Coinbase Users Should Monitor Before Oct. 26

Users holding GYEN on Coinbase should check their account balances before October 26 and review any official communications sent directly by Coinbase to their registered email addresses. The exchange typically notifies affected users through account alerts and support documentation ahead of asset changes of this nature.
Holders who want to avoid a market-rate automatic conversion have several options available before the deadline: selling GYEN for another asset on Coinbase, withdrawing GYEN to an external wallet that still supports the token, or accepting the automatic USDC conversion. Only Coinbase's official support materials can confirm which of these options remain available up to the October 26 cutoff, and users should consult those resources directly for account-specific guidance.
The practical urgency is straightforward. Once transfers are halted, outbound movement of GYEN tokens from Coinbase will no longer be possible, and the conversion to USDC will proceed at whatever market rate applies at execution. Account holders who are indifferent to the yen-dollar rate at that moment may find the automatic conversion acceptable; those with a specific exit price in mind should act independently before the deadline.
Coinbase has been active on multiple fronts beyond this single asset change. The exchange recently urged action on Bitcoin quantum security, signaling that its policy engagement extends well beyond individual token listings. The SEC's approval of Cboe binary options referencing Coinbase and MARA metrics also underscores the exchange's growing role as a benchmark in regulated derivatives markets.
For the broader Bitcoin network, the GYEN situation is a marginal event. Bitcoin's fixed supply schedule and permissionless transfer design are unaffected by stablecoin listing decisions on any centralized exchange. The GYEN wind-down is a reminder that assets built on centralized issuer trust and fiat currency linkage carry operational risks that do not exist within Bitcoin's protocol layer, where transfer capability cannot be administratively halted by a platform operator.
