Coinbase will halt all transfers of GYEN, the Japanese yen-pegged stablecoin, on October 26, 2026, and subsequently convert any remaining customer balances into USD Coin (USDC) at prevailing market rates. The move marks a full wind-down of the asset on the exchange, leaving holders a narrow window to withdraw or trade before the cutoff.

Coinbase Sets Oct. 26 Deadline for GYEN Transfers

According to reporting by CryptoSlate, Coinbase is dropping GYEN years after the token's price crash sparked investor lawsuits against the exchange. The October 26 date represents the hard deadline after which customers will no longer be able to send or receive GYEN on the platform. For related coverage, see SEC Approves Coinbase Metric Binary Options: What Changes.

GYEN is a yen-denominated stablecoin designed to track the value of the Japanese yen. Unlike dollar-pegged assets such as USDC, yen stablecoins carry embedded exposure to USD/JPY exchange rate movements, which adds a layer of currency risk for holders accustomed to dollar-denominated portfolios.
Coinbase has expanded its regulatory footprint in recent years, with the exchange pursuing CFTC-related approvals for Bitcoin products and receiving SEC clearance for new operating metrics-based instruments. The delisting of GYEN fits a pattern of the exchange tightening its listed assets amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of stablecoins.

What Happens to Remaining GYEN Balances

Customers who still hold GYEN on Coinbase after the transfer halt will have their balances converted to USDC at market rates. The conversion will reflect whatever USD/JPY exchange rate applies at the time, meaning holders bear the currency risk between now and the conversion date.

The distinction between the transfer halt and the subsequent balance conversion matters for holders with larger positions. Withdrawing GYEN to an external wallet before October 26 preserves optionality: holders can move funds to another venue or convert on their own terms. Waiting for Coinbase's automatic conversion removes that choice and locks in the exchange's market-rate calculation.

USDC, the stablecoin Coinbase will distribute in exchange, is a dollar-pegged asset co-issued by Circle and central to several of Coinbase's regulated product offerings. Holders receiving USDC will end up with dollar exposure rather than yen exposure, which is a meaningful change in their currency position.

Balance conversion: Any GYEN remaining on Coinbase after the halt will be converted to USDC.

Conversion basis: The conversion will occur at market rates; holders should consult Coinbase's official support documentation for the exact timeline and operational details not covered in this report.

For holders monitoring Coinbase's broader asset strategy, large institutional flows through Coinbase custody continue to grow alongside these listing changes, reflecting a dual trend of institutional deepening and retail asset rationalization on the platform.

Holders who want to retain yen-denominated exposure should act before the October 26 transfer deadline. After that date, Coinbase's infrastructure will no longer support the asset, and the conversion to USDC will proceed automatically at whatever market rate prevails at the time of settlement.
