Yes, Dogwifhat and Dogecoin come from two different crypto generations. Dogecoin launched in 2013 as its own proof-of-work blockchain with no supply cap, and it is now the largest memecoin by market value. Dogwifhat (WIF) launched in November 2023 as a token on Solana with a fixed supply of about 998.9 million.
Both use a Shiba Inu as a mascot, but they differ in how they run, how their supply works and how their communities are formed.

Where Did Dogecoin And Dogwifhat Come From?

The two coins were born ten years apart, in very different markets.

Dogecoin: The 2013 Original

Dogecoin was created in 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke about crypto speculation, using the Doge Shiba Inu meme. Its early community, known as Shibes, became known for tipping on Reddit and for charity drives, such as a 2014 fundraiser for the Jamaican bobsled team.

Dogwifhat: The 2023 Solana Newcomer

WIF launched quietly on November 20, 2023, on Raydium, a Solana decentralized exchange, with only a few thousand dollars in liquidity. An anonymous team deployed it, using a viral photo of a Shiba Inu named Achi wearing a pink knitted hat. The ticker misspells “with” in internet slang. There was no presale or venture capital allocation. Early buyers received 18% of the supply, and 82% went into liquidity pools.

How Do Their Tech And Tokenomics Differ?

The biggest split is that Dogecoin is a blockchain, while WIF is a token that lives on someone else’s blockchain.

Dogecoin Runs Its Own Chain

Consensus: Proof-of-work, merge-mined with Litecoin through AuxPoW, so miners can secure both networks with the same work.

Block time: About one minute, ten times faster than Bitcoin.

Supply: No cap. Each block pays 10,000 DOGE, adding about 5.26 billion DOGE a year. About 156.36 billion DOGE circulated on October 19, 2026.

WIF Is A Solana SPL Token

Standard: WIF is an SPL token, Solana’s version of Ethereum’s ERC-20 token standard.

Block time: Solana produces blocks in roughly 400 milliseconds, and fees are low.

Supply: Fixed at about 998.9 million WIF, all already in circulation. There is no minting, burning or staking.

In short, DOGE’s supply grows slowly every year, while WIF’s will never change. Traders also often treat WIF as a bet on the health of the wider Solana ecosystem.

Are They Really Two Generations Of Memecoins?

Their histories suggest yes, because each coin reflects the crypto culture of its launch year.

Dogecoin’s Giving Culture

Dogecoin grew up around small payments and charity. Shibes tipped each other through Reddit bots, raised about $55,000 in 2014 to sponsor NASCAR driver Josh Wise, and funded water wells in Kenya. In April 2026, the Dogecoin Foundation, House of Doge and MoonPay donated 1 million DOGE to the AKC Humane Fund. DOGE also reached Wall Street through spot ETFs, though Bitwise closed its BWOW fund on October 14, 2026, after less than a year.

WIF’s Trading Culture

WIF grew out of Solana’s 2023 to 2024 memecoin wave, where tokens launched on decentralized exchanges and traded around the clock. Its best-known stunt came on March 14, 2024, when holders crowdfunded about $700,000 in USDC to put the hat-wearing dog on the Las Vegas Sphere. WIF peaked near $4.85 in late March 2024, a market value above $4 billion, before a long decline.

How Are DOGE And WIF Priced Today?

Both coins are trading well below their past highs.

DOGE: $0.0775 on October 19, 2026, down 2.12% in 24 hours, with a market cap of $12.12 billion, ranking 12th, according to Bybit. Its 2026 low is $0.0673.

WIF: About $0.20 on Binance on October 18, 2026, down 1.78% in 24 hours. With a fixed supply of about 998.9 million, that puts its market value near $200 million, roughly 96% below its 2024 peak. WIF hit $0.2682 on October 2 before falling to $0.1892 on October 15.

Conclusion

Dogecoin and Dogwifhat share a mascot but little else. DOGE is a 2013 proof-of-work chain with one-minute blocks, an uncapped supply and a long record of tipping and charity. WIF is a 2023 Solana SPL token with a fixed supply of about 998.9 million and no team allocation. DOGE traded near $0.0775 on October 19, while WIF held near $0.20, above its 200-day average.
