Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder of Binance widely known as CZ, has pushed back against growing concern that artificial intelligence could be weaponized to break cryptocurrency security, arguing the fears are overblown given that the internet and the traditional banking system operate on comparatively weaker cryptographic foundations than Bitcoin and other major blockchains.

The remarks place CZ on the more optimistic side of a debate that has gained traction as AI systems grow more capable. Concerns have circulated in security research circles about whether sufficiently advanced AI could accelerate attacks against the elliptic-curve cryptography that underpins Bitcoin wallet security, or speed up brute-force attempts against other common encryption schemes. CZ's counterpoint is that those risks should be weighed against the state of security across the broader digital infrastructure, not just crypto in isolation.
CZ's View on AI-Driven Crypto Hacking Fears

CZ framed the AI hacking concern as an asymmetric argument: critics focus on cryptography used in blockchain networks while overlooking that the same or weaker encryption protects far more sensitive infrastructure. His assessment is that if AI posed a near-term practical threat to Bitcoin-grade cryptography, the far larger and more immediately lucrative targets in banking, government systems, and internet infrastructure would face equal or greater exposure first.
It is worth treating this as CZ's stated perspective rather than a settled technical conclusion. He is not a credentialed cryptographer, and his view represents one position in a layered technical debate. Proponents of taking the AI threat more seriously argue that the question is not whether crypto is weaker than banking systems, but whether AI development timelines could outpace cryptographic upgrades across all of those systems simultaneously.

The concern about a potential hack sending Bitcoin to zero has been raised by prominent investors before. Chamath Palihapitiya, for instance, has argued that a successful hack could send Bitcoin to zero, underscoring how seriously some market participants take the security risk even if they remain a minority view.

Why CZ Compared Crypto With Internet and Banking Security

The core of CZ's argument rests on a comparative security framing. Bitcoin's SHA-256 proof-of-work hashing and the secp256k1 elliptic-curve cryptography used for wallet keys are widely regarded by cryptographers as robust. By contrast, large portions of internet and banking infrastructure still rely on RSA and older TLS implementations that many security researchers consider more vulnerable to future computational threats, including those posed by quantum computing and advanced AI-assisted cryptanalysis.

CZ's point, as conveyed in his remarks, is that these legacy systems handle trillions of dollars in transactions daily and have not been upgraded at the pace that the theoretical risk might warrant. If the threat were truly imminent, the argument goes, pressure would fall on those older systems before it reached Bitcoin. That framing has intuitive appeal but does not account for the targeted nature of crypto attacks, where even a narrow exploit against a specific wallet implementation or exchange key management system could be highly profitable without requiring a full break of Bitcoin's base-layer cryptography.

CZ has long been a prominent voice on crypto security matters through his work building Binance into one of the world's largest crypto exchanges, where security architecture and key management are operational priorities. His perspective is shaped by practical experience managing exchange-level security at scale, which gives his view operational grounding even when it differs from more cautious academic assessments.

What the Comments Mean for the AI-and-Crypto Security Debate

The broader debate over AI and crypto security sits at an early, unresolved stage. Current large language models and machine-learning systems are not capable of breaking well-implemented elliptic-curve or SHA-256 cryptography; the threat, if it materializes, would likely come from AI-assisted optimization of quantum algorithms rather than classical computation alone. Most cryptographers place that timeline in the range of years to decades, not months, though the uncertainty is genuine.

CZ's comments serve as a counterweight to more alarmist framings that sometimes circulate in crypto media. The measured reading of his position is that prioritization matters: if the goal is hardening digital financial infrastructure against future AI-driven threats, the weakest links across the entire system deserve attention before treating Bitcoin's cryptography as the primary vulnerability. That is a defensible prioritization argument, even if it does not amount to a full rebuttal of the underlying risk.

Bitcoin's price has at times reacted sharply to security narratives. A sharp sell-off earlier this year saw Bitcoin test the $81,500 ETF cost basis level amid broader market stress, illustrating how quickly sentiment can shift when confidence is shaken. Whether AI-related security fears will meaningfully move markets remains an open question, but CZ's willingness to address the concern publicly suggests the topic has enough traction to warrant a direct response from major industry figures.

For now, CZ's remarks represent one influential perspective in an ongoing technical and policy conversation, not a resolution of it. The debate over AI's long-term implications for cryptographic security will continue to evolve alongside both AI capability benchmarks and the crypto industry's own efforts to assess and upgrade its security posture.
