when

Avalanche (@avax) does not run on a single blockchain. Its main network, called the Primary Network, is split across three chains: the C-Chain, the P-Chain and the X-Chain. Each handles a different task, and the split affects how users hold, move and spend $AVAX.

What each Avalanche chain does

According to Avalanche's developer documentation, the Primary Network is a special Avalanche L1 that runs three blockchains: the Contract Chain (C-Chain), the Platform Chain (P-Chain) and the Exchange Chain (X-Chain).

The C-Chain is where most application activity takes place. It is an implementation of the Ethereum Virtual Machine, and its API supports the deployment and execution of smart contracts written in Solidity. That EVM compatibility means apps built for Ethereum can run on it.

The P-Chain handles the network's coordination layer. It is responsible for validator and Avalanche L1-level operations, including staking and the creation of new blockchains and Avalanche L1s.

The X-Chain is where assets are created and moved. It handles the issuance and trading of what are known as Avalanche Native Tokens. That includes $AVAX. The chain does not support smart contracts, and uses a simpler model.

Helicon changes how the C-Chain executes blocks

The C-Chain was reworked in September. Avalanche activated its Helicon upgrade on Mainnet on Sept. 22, introducing a new C-Chain execution model intended to increase processing capacity and speed receipt issuance during periods of heavy demand.

Its central feature, Continuous Execution, separates consensus from transaction execution by placing accepted blocks in a queue while a concurrent executor processes their transactions. In practical terms, the network can agree on the order of new blocks while still working through the transactions in earlier ones.

Helicon also touched validators. The minimum staking duration is now 48 hours, down from two weeks, while the effective uptime requirement for new validation periods rose to 90% from 80%.

Why AVAX balances are kept separate

$AVAX is the fee token across the Primary Network, and each chain keeps its own balance. A holder therefore has to transfer AVAX to a given chain before using it there. The split also matters when sending funds. AVAX exists on three chains: on the X-Chain, where it can be traded, on the P-Chain, where it can be staked, and on the C-Chain, where it can be used in smart contracts or to pay for gas.

Choosing the wrong chain is a common source of mistakes. A C-Chain address looks like an Ethereum address, 42 characters beginning with 0x, while X-Chain addresses begin with X-avax and P-Chain addresses with P-avax. Users should check which chain an exchange or wallet expects before sending.

The multi-chain design is central to how Avalanche positions itself against single-chain networks. By assigning smart contracts, staking and asset issuance to separate chains, the network keeps those workloads from competing for the same block space.
