Switzerland has approved its first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors, allowing a regulated investment product to hold the cryptocurrency directly. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced the decision on October 20, citing rising demand while warning investors about possible losses.

Why Switzerland Granted Its First Retail Bitcoin ETF Approval

FINMA classified the product as an alternative investment fund carrying special risks. Unlike the crypto fund approved in 2021, which served qualified investors and held several digital assets, the new ETF targets the wider public and invests directly in Bitcoin.

The regulator made an exception to diversification requirements. FINMA said Bitcoin’s longer trading record and high trading volume supported that decision. It added that other fund providers had submitted or announced similar applications.

The decision comes as regulated Bitcoin products gain broader uses. A recent report described how banks accept Bitcoin ETF shares as loan collateral, showing another way investors can use these holdings without selling them.

FINMA Requires Custody Controls and Investor Warnings

FINMA instructed supervised financial firms to limit risks linked to fund operations and Bitcoin storage. Its conditions follow custody guidance issued in January 2026, covering how regulated institutions manage cryptocurrency-related exposure.

Firms selling the ETF must follow Switzerland’s Financial Services Act. They must explain potential losses and price swings clearly. They must also assess whether products are appropriate or suitable for customers under the applicable rules.

FINMA stressed that approval does not make Bitcoin a safe investment. The warning follows recent outflows from U.S. crypto ETFs, including $82.39 million withdrawn from spot Bitcoin funds on October 16.

U.S. Bitcoin ETFs Provide a Market Comparison

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have traded since January 2024, giving investors exposure through conventional brokerage accounts. Their daily fund flows offer a measure of changing demand, although those figures can move sharply between sessions.

On October 19, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $527 million in net inflows. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust received $665.2 million, while Fidelity and Grayscale funds reported withdrawals. The latest Bitcoin ETF inflow figures showed uneven demand across providers.

FINMA has not identified the new Swiss fund’s issuer or announced a trading launch date in its statement. Investors therefore still need product documents before assessing fees, custody arrangements, and trading access. The regulator said it expects fund managers to explain these risks clearly.
