Protect Progress, an affiliate of the crypto-focused super PAC Fairshake, is drawing fresh scrutiny after filing with the U.S. Federal Election Commission showed it spent $362,000 on advertisements supporting incumbent Democrat Aisha Wahab in California’s 14th congressional district—despite Wahab defeating the same opponent in a special election earlier this year.

The development underscores the complexity of “pro-crypto” political alignments in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms, even as candidates in the district previously signaled support for digital-asset policy initiatives through questionnaires with Stand With Crypto.

Key takeaways

FEC records show Protect Progress spent $362,000 on media supporting Aisha Wahab against Melissa Hernandez in California’s 14th district.

Wahab had already won the August 18 special election against Hernandez with more than 53% of the vote.

Both Wahab and Hernandez had been rated “strongly supports crypto” after responding to Stand With Crypto questionnaires.

Wahab and Hernandez faced off in part due to the vacancy created by Rep. Eric Swalwell’s resignation in April following sexual assault allegations.

Fairshake and related PACs continue to allocate large sums across multiple states, including fresh media spending tied to Senate contests in Ohio and Nebraska.

Why Protect Progress’s spending raises new questions

In a Sunday filing with the Federal Election Commission, Protect Progress reported spending $362,000 on media supporting incumbent Democrat Aisha Wahab in California’s Bay Area–anchored 14th district. The ads targeted Wahab’s fellow Democratic party member, Melissa Hernandez.

The timing is notable. Wahab and Hernandez met in a special election on Aug. 18 to determine who would serve out the remainder of Rep. Eric Swalwell’s term, which runs until January 2027. Wahab won that race with more than 53% of the vote.

That makes Protect Progress’s subsequent support—so soon after the earlier head-to-head contest—particularly striking. It also highlights a recurring tension in U.S. crypto-aligned politics: even when candidates share broadly similar “pro-crypto” credentials, outside groups may still prioritize different strategic or tactical outcomes depending on the election cycle.

Crypto-aligned ratings don’t prevent intraparty conflict

Adding to the apparent contradiction, both candidates were ranked as “strongly supports crypto” after they completed questionnaires for Stand With Crypto ahead of the August special election.

Stand With Crypto questionnaires have become a widely followed way for digital-asset-aligned voters and advocacy groups to gauge candidates’ positions. The fact that both Wahab and Hernandez scored similarly suggests that the dispute later reflected in the media spending may not be rooted in a basic difference on crypto policy. Instead, it points to other factors—such as campaign strategy, party dynamics, or shifting priorities as the general election approaches.

Cointelegraph reached out to both campaigns as well as Fairshake for comment on the spending, but did not receive immediate responses.

Debate remarks and the politics of PAC spending

During an Oct. 7 debate, Wahab indicated that she opposed Hernandez, in part because Hernandez had not denounced expenditures from corporate PACs aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Wahab argued that such spending “really deteriorated our democracy,” according to coverage of the debate.

In the same political landscape, crypto-aligned groups—including Fairshake and its affiliates—have spent heavily to shape outcomes in the broader 2026 cycle. While the Wahab-Hernandez framing centers on corporate PAC influence more broadly, Protect Progress’s reported spending adds another layer to how voters may interpret outside money in congressional races.

Coverage of the debate noted the contest in the district; for readers tracking the candidates’ messaging, that exchange is relevant for understanding how candidates attempt to distinguish themselves even when policy ratings from advocacy groups appear aligned.

California’s 14th district will be redrawn for the midterms

One concrete difference between the August special election and the upcoming 2026 midterms is the district map. The boundaries of California’s 14th district are scheduled to change for the midterm elections due to the 2025 passage of Proposition 50, requiring new maps.

The current boundaries include parts of San Francisco’s East Bay, but the redistricting process may shift the demographic and political calculus for both campaigns. That matters to outside groups like Protect Progress because new lines can alter which issues and constituencies are most decisive—and therefore where advertising dollars are expected to have the greatest impact.

For investors and policy-watchers who treat “pro-crypto” political engagement as a proxy for regulatory risk, redistricting is an important variable: it can reshape who becomes the most likely coalition partner for industry-aligned priorities in Congress.

Fairshake affiliates continue spending beyond California

While Protect Progress’s California disclosure grabs attention, related filings show Fairshake remains active across multiple competitive contests. In January, Fairshake reported having $193 million in cash on hand ahead of the 2026 elections and said it had already used tens of millions of dollars supporting candidates in primaries and special elections.

With just over two weeks until the 2026 election, Fairshake also reported additional spending on media for Senate races in Ohio and Nebraska.

In Nebraska, Defend American Jobs—a Fairshake affiliate described as largely supporting Republican candidates—reported spending more than $6.7 million to oppose independent candidate Dan Osborn in the Senate race. In Ohio, the same affiliate reported $8 million on media supporting incumbent Republican Jon Husted against Democrat Sherrod Brown.

The Ohio race is notable not only for current advertising totals, but also because Fairshake previously spent heavily in the aftermath of Brown’s loss. According to the reporting cited, Brown lost his seat in 2024 to Republican Bernie Moreno after Fairshake and other interest groups spent a combined hundreds of millions of dollars on ads opposing Brown. That history positions Ohio as a potential bellwether for whether crypto-aligned political spending continues to reshape outcomes for congressional Democrats and Republicans alike.

For market participants watching regulatory sentiment, these cycles matter: large-scale advertising campaigns are typically built to influence not only election results, but also the policy direction of the next Congress.

As the redrawn California district heads into the midterms and as Fairshake’s affiliates maintain pressure in Senate contests, the key question for observers is whether “pro-crypto” alignment translates into consistent political cooperation—or whether outside groups will continue to back different candidates even when both have previously signaled similar policy support.
