Elon Musk has pledged to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, potentially distributing more than $10.5 billion in publicly traded stock through a program that could connect millions of young Americans to the company's future.
The SpaceX chief executive announced the plan on X early Monday, October 19, saying he would transfer shares from his personal holdings in 2027. Musk subsequently indicated support for using Trump Accounts, the government-backed investment accounts established for children.Musk's SpaceX Giveaway Could Reach $10.5 Billion
The United States has approximately 72 million residents younger than 18, according to Census Bureau estimates.
 SpaceX shares closed Friday at $146.03, placing the hypothetical value of one share for every child at approximately $10.51 billion.&amp;lt;iframe src=”https://widgets.coincodex.com/w/3e6a805a-8374-44d0-a9da-a4769b96bb52?site=coinpaper&amp;amp;mode=light” width=”100%” height=”420” frameborder=”0” referrerpolicy=”no-referrer-when-downgrade” style=”border:0;background:transparent;border-radius:0px;”&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/iframe&amp;gt;
The valuation is illustrative rather than a fixed donation amount. SpaceX shares could trade at significantly different prices when the transfers occur, while the final number of recipients depends on eligibility rules.
The aerospace and artificial intelligence company completed its Nasdaq debut in June at $135 per share, following an unusually large <a href="https://coinpaper.com/17421/elon-musk-s-space-x-amends-s-1-filing-ahead-of-planned-june-12-ipo-launch" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">IPO</a> that opened its ownership to public-market investors.
SpaceX later attracted institutional investors, including Harvard, whose reported <a href="https://coinpaper.com/34340/elon-musks-spacex-rises-6-as-harvard-reveals-22-billion-stake-in-spcx-stock" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">$2.2 billion holding</a> demonstrated the scale of demand among major investment institutions.
Musk's proposal would introduce a different shareholder group: children receiving stock without purchasing it.How Trump Accounts Could Distribute SpaceX Shares
Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts established for eligible children under Section 530A of the Internal Revenue Code.
The program generally permits U.S. children younger than 18 with Social Security numbers to open accounts, while a separate federal initiative provides $1,000 to eligible children born between 2025 and 2028.
That $1,000 government contribution is distinct from Musk's proposed private stock donation.
In July, the Treasury announced that qualifying philanthropists could contribute publicly traded shares through the program.
September regulations further clarified that eligible donated securities must be publicly traded, issued by domestic corporations and free from specified transfer restrictions.
Such donated shares would generally face a minimum holding period of five years or until the account holder reaches the end of the program's growth period, whichever comes first.
The mechanism also builds on existing corporate commitments. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell previously pledged stock to children's accounts, joining other business leaders supporting <a href="https://coinpaper.com/32783/donald-trump-calls-himself-big-crypto-guy-amid-bitcoin-accounts-talk" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Trump Accounts</a>.
However, the existence of a regulatory pathway does not confirm that Treasury has approved Musk's particular distribution.SpaceX Pledge Follows Anthropic's Major Stock Donation Plan
Musk's announcement followed Anthropic's October 18 commitment to allocate 5% of its equity to a public benefit fund.
The AI developer plans to use the fund to support initiatives addressing economic and social challenges, including the effects of artificial intelligence on employment.
Musk responded by advocating direct public ownership rather than distributing corporate wealth exclusively through a centralized charitable structure.
His proposed SpaceX giveaway also arrives after the company's historic listing reshaped its ownership structure and prompted debate about whether the <a href="https://coinpaper.com/17606/space-x-ipo-sparks-concerns-over-capital-leaving-crypto" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">IPO</a> could draw investment capital away from other markets.
SpaceX shares themselves remain subject to market volatility. The stock previously traded <a href="https://coinpaper.com/33781/spacex-stock-price-prediction-spcx-falls-20-below-ipo-price" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">below its IPO price</a>, illustrating why receiving a share does not guarantee a particular future dollar value.
For families, the proposed distribution could create a new investment asset, but its ultimate financial benefit would depend on SpaceX's performance and the rules governing when recipients can sell.
The next milestone is a formal explanation of which children qualify, how shares will be transferred and whether the program receives the necessary Treasury approvals before its proposed 2027 launch.
