Why do blockchain upgrades take years when apps update overnight? Cardano is a good case study.
Its Cardano upgrade timeline runs from a 2017 launch to a July 2026 hard fork approved by on-chain vote.
<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-a-hard-fork-in-blockchain-network" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">A hard fork</a> is a planned change to a blockchain’s rules, and every node has to adopt it before the network can keep moving forward together.
&nbsp;Cardano has used this route to bring in staking, native tokens, and smart contracts one stage at a time rather than all at once.
The goal here is to keep confirmed milestones apart from plans that may still change. Everything below is based on Cardano’s official pages, checked on October 19, 2026.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-cardano-and-what-does-a-hard-fork-mean-span-span">What Is Cardano, and What Does a Hard Fork Mean?</h2>
<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-cardano-in-2026-a-look-at-its-governance-shift" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain</a> with public code, built on peer-reviewed research. Proof of stake means block producers are chosen by the ADA staked with them, not by computing power.
The<a href="https://roadmap.cardano.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">official Cardano roadmap</a> groups its work into five eras: Byron, Shelley, Goguen, Basho, and Voltaire. Each era bundles related features.
On Cardano, a hard fork is not a community split. It marks one exact moment when every node switches to new rules, with the network still running.
That staged method shapes the whole Cardano upgrade timeline.

The<a href="https://cardano.org/hardforks/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">official hard fork history</a> lists eleven upgrades. The table covers the ten main stages, from Byron to van Rossem.

The Cardano upgrade timeline shows a clear order. Staking came first, then tokens, then smart contracts, and governance last.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-changed-in-the-early-cardano-upgrade-timeline-span-span">What Changed in the Early Cardano Upgrade Timeline?</h2>
Shelley added staking in July 2020. That started the shift from a federated network, run by approved nodes, to one run by the community.
Allegra then added token locking, and Mary brought native tokens in March 2021. Alonzo followed with <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/how-cardano-smart-contract-works" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Plutus smart contracts</a>, which let developers build dApps, apps that run on blockchain rules.
Vasil and Valentine focused on speed. In the Cardano upgrade timeline, they are the performance stage between smart contracts and voting.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-did-chang-and-plomin-move-control-to-the-community-span-span">How Did Chang and Plomin Move Control to the Community?</h2>
The Chang upgrade went live on September 1, 2024, and that was the point where the Conway era began. It switched on the first CIP-1694 governance tools, though only for parameter changes and for starting a hard fork.
Plomin arrived on January 29, 2025, and brought the rest, meaning every governance action along with the DRep role. A DRep, short for delegated representative, casts votes on behalf of ADA holders who choose to delegate that power.
Voting is one of three layers used to judge<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/cardano-decentralization-network-governance" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Cardano decentralization</a>, the other two being stake pools and stake distribution. Two hard forks sit inside the Cardano upgrade timeline as its governance chapter, and Van Rossem is the second of them.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-did-the-van-rossem-hard-fork-change-in-july-2026-span-span">What Did the Van Rossem Hard Fork Change in July 2026?</h3>
Van Rossem went live on July 18, 2026, exactly as epoch 644 began. That moved the mainnet from protocol version 10 to version 11.
A quick note on terms: an epoch is Cardano’s five-day cycle, so the upgrade landed cleanly at the start of a fresh one rather than midway through.
It is an intra-era hard fork, so no new ledger era opened. Official pages describe a smart contract release with ledger cleanup and Plutus performance gains.
Plutus V3 gained new built-in functions, which are ready-made tools inside the contract engine. These include a native array type and BLS12-381 math.
The initiation action passed with 77.6 percent of the DRep stake, 52.7 percent of the pool stake, and a Constitutional Committee majority.
Official pages call it the first hard fork proposed, debated, and ratified entirely through on-chain governance. In the Cardano upgrade timeline, that makes it a turning point.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-comes-next-after-van-rossem-span-span">What Comes Next After van Rossem?</h3>
Dijkstra is the next ledger era, running at protocol version 12. Conway was built around governance, while Dijkstra shifts the focus to scaling and faster settlement.
The<a href="https://cardanoupgrades.docs.intersectmbo.org/dijkstra-era-upgrade/dijkstra-upgrade-overview" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Dijkstra upgrade overview</a> splits the rollout into two phases. Phase 1 brings Linear Leios, which adds network capacity, plus nested transactions, targeted for Q4 2026.&nbsp;
Phase 2 follows in Q2 2027 with Ouroboros Peras, aiming for settlement in about two minutes. A public Leios testnet has run since June 23, 2026.&nbsp;
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-does-the-cardano-upgrade-timeline-reveal-span-span">What Does the Cardano Upgrade Timeline Reveal?</h2>
Mary to Alonzo took about six months. Valentine to Chang and Plomin to van Rossem each took close to 18 months. That may reflect time spent on votes, but it is interpretation, not an official claim.
The<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/cardano-development-philosophy-research-approach" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">research-first development approach</a> explains part of the pacing. Each feature starts as a paper, becomes a specification, and only then turns into code.
The public<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/cardano-academic-research-papers-ada-blockchain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">peer-reviewed academic research papers</a> behind most milestones make each claim easier to check. The Cardano upgrade timeline is slow, but it is traceable.
What Risks Could Delay or Weaken the Next Upgrade?
<ul>
 <li>Targets can slip: Dijkstra has no fixed mainnet date yet, so any delay could push the Cardano upgrade timeline deeper into 2027.</li>
 <li>Votes can stall: DReps, pool operators, and the Constitutional Committee all have to approve, which means a single hesitant group is enough to hold a fork back.</li>
 <li>Price is a separate matter: an upgrade does not guarantee a<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/cardano-price-prediction-ada-forecast" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">higher ADA price</a>, and past results say nothing certain about the future.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-conclusion-span-span">Conclusion</h2>
The Cardano upgrade timeline moves in clear stages. Byron launched the network, Shelley added staking, and Alonzo brought smart contracts.
Chang and Plomin built governance, and van Rossem became the first hard fork ratified entirely by on-chain vote.
Delivery is the open question. Dijkstra and Leios have targets but no fixed date, so official Cardano pages remain the best check on progress.
