Most blockchains show every transfer to the public. Zcash lets senders hide the amount, the sender, and the receiver.
The Zcash Orchard Protocol is the newest shielded system built for that job. It went live with the NU5 network upgrade on May 31, 2022.
The Zcash Orchard Protocol drops the trusted setup used by older pools and prepares the network for future scaling.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-is-zcash-and-how-does-shielded-privacy-work-span-span">What is Zcash, and how does shielded privacy work?</h2>
<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-blogs-details/what-is-zcash-zec-privacy-shielded-transactions" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash is a cryptocurrency</a> that grew out of Bitcoin's codebase and added a privacy layer on top. Its coin, ZEC, can move through transparent addresses or shielded ones.
Transparent transfers appear in full on the public ledger. Shielded transfers hide those details behind zero-knowledge proofs, which confirm a payment is valid without revealing who paid or how much.
Zcash has run three shielded pools. A pool is a set of private records that share one privacy group. Sprout came first, Sapling followed, and Orchard arrived third.
The Zcash Orchard Protocol is the shielded pool that hides who paid, who received, and how much moved. It went live with NU5 in 2022 and relies on zero-knowledge proofs.
Wallet-level steps for <a href="https://z.cash/learn/how-to-buy-and-use-zcash-orchard" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">using Orchard with ZEC</a> are explained on the Zcash website, which makes a handy next stop for first-time users.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-does-the-zcash-orchard-protocol-work-span-span">How Does the Zcash Orchard Protocol Work?</h2>
<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-orchard-shielded-pool-explained-for-beginners" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The protocol defines a shielded-pool</a> with its own spending keys and payment addresses. Its design follows Sapling closely, yet the cryptography underneath is new.
Every Orchard transaction is built from actions. An action holds one note being spent and one note being created, and either one can be a dummy.
A note is the private record of a coin amount owned by an address. Dummy notes fill empty slots, so real inputs and outputs are hard to count.
Several actions sit together in one bundle, and a single Halo 2 proof covers the whole bundle.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-halo-2-and-the-end-of-trusted-setup-span-span">Halo 2 and the End of Trusted Setup</h3>
Sprout and Sapling relied on a proving system called Groth16. It needs a trusted setup, which creates public parameters from hidden secret values.
If those secrets were ever recovered, an attacker could forge proofs and mint fake coins. The Sprout ceremony had six participants, while Sapling's drew about 90 per round.
The Zcash Orchard <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-halo-2-trusted-setup-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Protocol uses Halo 2</a> instead. The official documents state that it needs no structured reference string, so no ceremony is required.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-pallas-and-vesta-curves-span-span">Pallas and Vesta Curves</h3>
The Zcash Orchard Protocol runs on two elliptic curves named Pallas and Vesta. Together they form a curve cycle, a pairing that lets one proof check another proof efficiently.
The current protocol uses only half of that cycle. The specification says the full cycle is expected to support future updates, such as recursive proofs.
Sinsemilla handles commitments, which are sealed promises to a hidden value. Poseidon helps compute nullifiers, the tags that mark a note as spent.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-how-do-orchard-keys-and-unified-addresses-work-span-span">How Do Orchard Keys and Unified Addresses Work?</h2>
Orchard keys resemble Sapling keys but use the Pallas curve. The Orchard Book design notes explain that this change prepares the keys for the future curve cycle.
The Zcash Orchard Protocol also removes the nullifier private key. In Sapling it acted as a backup layer, yet it was hard to store more safely than a full viewing key.
Every diversifier now gives a valid payment address. A diversifier is a small value that lets one account create many addresses.
Orchard addresses have no stand-alone text format. Wallets use unified addresses instead, which bundle several address types and start with the prefix u1 on mainnet.
Viewing keys gives read-only access to an account's history, which supports audits and selective disclosure. Details on <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-viewing-keys-selective-transaction-disclosure" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash viewing keys</a> show how this works.

Each pool improved on the last. The Zcash Orchard Protocol removed the setup risk that both earlier systems carried, and the supply rules for ZEC stayed the same, as covered in<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-monetary-policy-supply-inflation-model" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash monetary policy</a>.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-why-does-the-zcash-orchard-protocol-need-its-own-anonymity-set-span-span">Why Does the Zcash Orchard Protocol Need Its Own Anonymity Set?</h2>
An anonymity set is the group of transactions an observer cannot tell apart. Orchard forms a separate set from Sprout and Sapling.
The pool started with zero notes, just as Sapling did. The ZIP expects it to grow faster because actions hide how many notes each transaction uses.
Moving ZEC into or out of Orchard happens through a transparent field called the value balance. This turnstile keeps any counterfeiting bug inside its own pool.
Spending from Orchard to a non-Orchard address reveals the transaction value. The specification tells wallets to explain this clearly and to move users toward holding funds in Orchard.
Recursive scaling remains a stated goal, and the<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-development-roadmap-future-privacy-features" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash development roadmap</a> tracks how those upgrades may unfold.
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-does-the-design-suggest-an-analyst-view-span-span">What Does the Design Suggest? An Analyst View</h2>
This section is an interpretation, not a confirmed fact. The boldest choice is dropping the trusted setup, a risk earlier pools carried from day one.
The curve cycle looks like a bet on the future. Orchard ships the groundwork without the full scaling system, so each upgrade stays smaller.
The Zcash Orchard Protocol still depends on behavior. Strong cryptography offers little cover if most users hold funds elsewhere or switch pools often.
<h3 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-what-risks-does-the-zcash-orchard-protocol-still-carry-span-span">What Risks Does the Zcash Orchard Protocol Still Carry?</h3>
<ul>
<li>Amounts stop being hidden once ZEC leaves Orchard for a transparent or older shielded address, because the transferred value then shows up on the public chain.</li>
<li>Cover is only as good as the crowd, so a pool with few holders keeping funds inside Orchard gives thinner privacy.</li>
<li>A wallet can weaken solid cryptography by handling unified addresses and pools badly, and<a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/zcash-wallet-guide-privacy-compatible-wallets" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash wallet options</a> differ a lot on this front.</li>
<li>Halo 2 and Sinsemilla are younger than the systems they replaced, so they have less time in the field and still need steady review.</li>
<li>Privacy features sometimes draw regulatory attention, and exchange support for shielded coins can change from one region to another.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="span-span-style-font-size-16px-conclusion-span-span">Conclusion</h2>
The Zcash Orchard Protocol arrived with the NU5 upgrade in 2022 as a shielded pool that hides transaction details. Halo 2 proofs, the Pallas and Vesta curves, and bundled actions do the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
The biggest change in the Zcash Orchard Protocol is the end of the trusted setup that earlier pools depended on. What happens next depends on how many users move into the pool, how well wallets handle it, and when future upgrades land.
The official<a href="https://z.cash/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Zcash website</a> gives a plain overview of the project’s privacy approach. Wallets, developer tools, and community resources are listed there too, which helps when checking how confidential transactions work on Zcash.
