Defend American Jobs, the Republican-focused arm of the Fairshake network, has reported $46.67 million in Ohio independent expenditures, and the Winklevoss-backed Digital Freedom Fund $5.94 million, according to FEC filings that crypto.news totals at $52.61 million. The race is a special election for the seat JD Vance vacated, which Gov. Mike DeWine filled by appointing Jon Husted in January 2025. The winner serves through 2028 and then has to run again.

Most of it is filed as support for Husted, not opposition to Brown, according to Tech Influence Watch’s tracker. Some headlines frame the whole total as spending against Brown. The filings don’t read that way.

Digital Freedom Fund’s October 11 filing shows both uses: $990,066 of direct mail supporting Husted and $1.98 million opposing Brown, printed and posted by Minute Mail Consulting Group. Those payments are part of its $5.94 million total. Neither committee gives money to a campaign. Independent expenditures pay for ads and mail made without the candidates.

VoteLog’s tracker counts $356 million in total spending in the race so far, which puts crypto’s share near 15%. Not all outside money favours Husted: another super PAC, Duty and Country, spent about $8.8 million attacking him in ten days, Inside Political Money reports. In 2024 Fairshake spent about $41 million in Ohio supporting Bernie Moreno and opposing Brown, and Moreno won 50.2% to 46.4%.

Who is paying

Defend American Jobs is funded through Fairshake, whose backers include Coinbase, Ripple and Andreessen Horowitz. Coinbase pledged $25 million to Fairshake and its affiliates in October 2024 for the next election cycle. Tech Influence Watch now counts $130.1 million from Coinbase and $62.2 million from Ripple Labs in this cycle’s crypto-industry contributions. Fairshake held $193 million in cash in January, and about $120 million entering September. Decrypt reports it expects to spend more than $100 million across House and Senate races this cycle.

Digital Freedom Fund was started by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and its money arrived as bitcoin. Its year-end filing records $21.29 million from Winklevoss Capital Fund in August 2025, which is 188.4547 BTC described as “not liquidated,” plus $1 million from Payward, which operates Kraken. It didn’t report candidate-targeted spending until late September 2026, and the FEC shows about $8.1 million in cash at the end of that month.

The industry isn’t backing only Republicans. On October 5 Fairshake said it would support 32 House incumbents, 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, all of whom voted for CLARITY when the House passed it in July 2025, Decrypt reported.

Brown has called Husted the industry’s candidate: “Jon Husted is their boy,” he said as the spending climbed. Husted wrote in an August newsletter that he is a “proud cosponsor” of CLARITY and wants to see it pass.

Brown chaired the Banking Committee before losing in 2024, and Decrypt notes he stalled market-structure legislation from that seat. His 2023 committee statement called digital assets “speculative products run by reckless companies” and listed safeguards he wanted, including separating customer funds from company assets, curbs on insider conflicts and anti-money-laundering rules.

A Husted win keeps one of the 49 yeas. A Brown win swaps in the senator Fairshake is trying to keep out. Neither adds a yes vote.

All 49 yeas were Republicans, including Ohio’s two senators, Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno. Every Democrat and independent who voted opposed it, and Republicans Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Jerry Moran and Thom Tillis voted no. Chris Coons didn’t vote.
