On July 20, 2026, a San Isidro judge ordered 537 betting sites cut off, the largest such action Buenos Aires Province had seen. Argentina's communications regulator ENACOM put the order into effect through internet providers.
The case reflects how Argentina regulates gambling. Licences come from the provinces and the City of Buenos Aires, while courts pursue unlicensed sites under the national Penal Code.
Congress now weighs two bills that would add national rules on advertising, minors and payments, and one of them could lapse in November.

Argentina's constitution leaves gambling to the provinces, so the 23 provinces and the autonomous City of Buenos Aires each set their own rules. The two largest online markets show how far those rules can differ.

Every Argentine province writes its own requirements, much as offshore and European regimes differ from one another. Licensing standards vary internationally as well, and a look at what<a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/2026/09/licensed-crypto-casinos-in-2026-what-each-regime-requires" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> each regime requires</a> shows how far apart they can be.
<h2 id="crossing-general-paz-changes-the-licence">Crossing General Paz Changes the Licence</h2>
Provincial licences stop at provincial borders. Avenida General Paz and the Riachuelo divide the City from Buenos Aires Province, and licensed operators use geolocation to detect when a player crosses either line.
Major brands often operate separate City and Province versions with different domains and balances that do not transfer. Someone who opens an account in Palermo and travels to La Plata may find that account locked until they return.
Legal sites usually use the .bet.ar domain and display the logo of the provincial regulator. Province of Buenos Aires operators also show their IPLyC licence details on the site.
<h2 id="courts-and-enacom-target-unlicensed-sites">Courts and ENACOM Target Unlicensed Sites</h2>
Prosecutors pursue unlicensed operators under Article 301 bis of the Penal Code, which punishes the illegal exploitation of gambling. Provincial courts issue blocking orders, and ENACOM coordinates with internet providers to cut access to the listed domains.
San Isidro's cybercrime prosecutor, Patricio Ferrari, led both major cases of 2026. Ferrari's April order covered 251 sites, and the July order reached 537, after a complaint from the Argentine Chamber of Casinos, Bingos and Annexed Halls.
Investigators said the blocked sites lacked fairness certification and proper identity checks, which let minors open accounts. UNICEF Argentina's 2025 survey found that one in four adolescents aged 12 to 17 had placed an online bet.
<h2 id="two-bills-before-the-senate">Two Bills Before the Senate</h2>
National lawmakers have tried for two years to layer federal rules over the provincial model. Two texts now await the Senate, each with a different focus.
<h3 id="the-prevention-bill-from-diputados">The Prevention Bill From Diputados</h3>
The Chamber of Deputies approved a gambling addiction and online betting bill on November 27, 2024, with 139 votes in favour. Its provisions include:
<ul>
 <li>Advertising: limits on gambling ads across social media, broadcast media and public spaces</li>
 <li>Sponsorship: restrictions on deals with football clubs and athletes</li>
 <li>Age: a ban on under-18s using online betting and prediction platforms</li>
 <li>Verification: identity checks linked to RENAPER, the national registry of persons</li>
 <li>Self-exclusion: a national register for players who want to block themselves</li>
</ul>
Senate committees have debated the text since 2025 without a final vote. Argentine bills lose parliamentary status after two years without passage, and in October 2026 the Catholic Church's social ministry urged the Senate to act before the November deadline.
<h3 id="the-executive-bill">The Executive Bill</h3>
President Javier Milei's government sent its own bill to the Senate in May 2026. It would add Article 301 ter to the Penal Code, with prison terms of three to six years for unauthorised operators and two to four years for anyone who provides them financial, technical or advertising services.
The bill would also require the Central Bank to prevent transactions with illegal platforms and would task ENACOM with blocking related content and ads. Provinces would keep their licensing powers, with closer coordination against sites that operate across borders.
<h2 id="what-the-model-means-for-players-in-argentina">What the Model Means for Players in Argentina</h2>
Residents can legally bet only with operators licensed in the province where they are physically located. Offshore crypto sportsbooks lack both a provincial licence and recognition from any Argentine regulator, and people living in Argentina should keep to provincially approved sites.
Advertising rules form a central part of both bills, and the reasons regulated gambling faces tighter promotion rules than other products appear in a look at<a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/2026/08/advertising-a-regulated-product-why-igaming-marketing-is-different" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> iGaming marketing</a>. Payment controls would add another layer if the executive bill passes.
<h2 id="for-fans-outside-argentina">For Fans Outside Argentina</h2>
Argentine football fans abroad, from Madrid to Miami, follow Liga Profesional and Copa Libertadores fixtures under the laws of the country where they live.<a href="https://dexsport.io/?utm_source=tf&amp;cid=fdb4094d0f7748e2f_20251103130216&amp;aid=887" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> Dexsport</a> operates through Dexapp LTD under an Anjouan licence and lacks approval from any Argentine province.
For fans outside Argentina, Dexsport prices football from a rulebook of 39 market types, with live betting and Cash Out on eligible bets. Dexsport sets its age floor at 18, or higher where local adulthood starts later, and the operator can request identity documents at any time.
South American kick-offs often fall late at night in Europe or early in the morning in Asia. Fans who follow matches across continents can plan betting across<a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/2026/08/betting-across-time-zones-us-and-european-schedules" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> time zones</a> around those slots with a little preparation.
<h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2>
Gambling regulation in Argentina belongs to the provinces. The City of Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires Province host the largest online markets through LOTBA and IPLyC, and geolocation keeps each licence inside its own borders.
Courts and ENACOM block unlicensed sites under Article 301 bis, with orders covering hundreds of domains in 2026. Two bills in the Senate would add national rules on advertising, minors, verification and payments, and the Diputados text could lapse in November 2026.
Residents of Argentina should use provincially licensed operators only. Supporters abroad need to confirm what their own country permits, bet only at legal age and allow for the fact that KYC or AML checks may apply.
