VanEck Digital Assets, LLC filed a Form RW with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 14, 2026, requesting the voluntary withdrawal of its proposed Lido Staked Ethereum ETF registration statement, effectively shelving what would have been a regulated U.S. vehicle for liquid staking token exposure.

In the filing, VanEck states that it does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution of the trust's shares.
The registration statement was never declared effective by the SEC, and the filing confirms that no securities were issued or sold under it. This is a sponsor-initiated Rule 477 withdrawal of an uneffective S-1, not an SEC rejection of the application. The proposal sat with the SEC for roughly a year before the sponsor opted to pull it.

VanEck has been among the more active asset managers in pursuing crypto ETF products. The firm updated its BNB ETF filing to add a staking objective earlier this year, signaling continued interest in yield-bearing digital asset structures even as this stETH proposal is now off the table.

What the Withdrawal Means for the Proposed stETH ETF

With the Form RW accepted, the proposed VanEck Lido Staked Ethereum ETF no longer has an active registration with the SEC. The withdrawal eliminates the legal pathway this specific structure would have used to bring stETH exposure to traditional brokerage accounts.

The filing provides no commercial, regulatory, or market rationale for the decision. VanEck has not announced a revised product, a new filing timeline, or a replacement structure, according to reporting from CoinGape. The reasons behind the withdrawal remain publicly unstated.

One framing worth noting: staking products occupy a distinct policy position from simple spot ETFs. Coin Center's Peter Van Valkenburgh has written that "the particular choice of consensus mechanism for an open blockchain network should not have significant implications for public policy," per Coin Center's policy research on staking. How regulators ultimately treat staked-asset wrappers may have shaped VanEck's calculus, though that is not established by the filing itself.

Ethereum was trading at $2,411.78 at the time of publication, down 0.86% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of approximately $294.6 billion. The broader crypto market Fear & Greed Index sat at 53, in Neutral territory.

This is not the first time VanEck has navigated SEC registration procedures for a crypto product. The firm previously withdrew its SEC registration for the Lido Staked Ethereum ETF, and separately sought SEC withdrawal of its Lido staking Ethereum ETF filing, reflecting an ongoing process of re-evaluation rather than a clean break.

What to Watch Next

Investors and market observers tracking this space should monitor SEC EDGAR for any new Form S-1 or amended filing from VanEck Digital Assets that references stETH or liquid staking structures. A new filing would signal the firm intends to reapproach the product under a revised framework.

Any official VanEck statement explaining the withdrawal, or a new filing from a competing asset manager seeking a stETH-backed product, would be the next material development. Until then, the Form RW stands as the only official record, and the stated reason remains that the sponsor chose not to proceed.
