Gold

The best wedding gift on the internet this week was not diamonds.
A wedding video <a href="https://x.com/RT_Visual_on_X/status/2111063956965962152" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">circulating on X</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Indiangamers/comments/1x7kb8q/chinese_bride_gifts_her_partner_a_flagship_gpu_at/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Reddit</a>&nbsp;on Oct. 16 shows a Chinese bride handing her new husband an Asus ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090, Nvidia’s <a href="https://rog.asus.com/us/graphics-cards/graphics-cards/rog-astral/rog-astral-rtx5090-o32g-white/wtb/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">flagship</a> gaming graphics card.&nbsp;
The groom promptly broke down into tears.

Reddit users were quick to weigh in. “Never hurt her feelings bro,” one commenter advised the groom. Another pointed out the catch: “Good luck getting a cpu and ram that won’t bottleneck with that beast." That is a fair warning given that soaring memory prices have made a high-end PC build its own expensive project.

The couple has not been identified.

It isn’t the first time this exact card has shown up at a Chinese wedding.
In October 2025, a video shared on Reddit&nbsp;showed another bride stopping the gift exchange to hand her groom a math problem:
520 × 10 + 1314 − 514 − 619 + 666 − 957
<blockquote class="reddit-embed-bq" style="height:500px"><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit-pcmasterrace/comment" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"></a>
</blockquote>
In Chinese internet slang, numbers stand in for words that sound like them: 520 means “I love you” (multiplied by 10, for emphasis) and 1314 means “for a lifetime”.
The groom worked it out, and the total was 5090. Then her bridesmaids brought out an Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090. He gave her a bouquet.

<h2 id="a-gift-that-shouldn-t-exist-in-china">A gift that shouldn’t exist in China&nbsp;</h2>
It’s not just an expensive card but also the rare wedding gift that comes with a side of geopolitics.
The limited ROG Astral Edition 20 anniversary model <a href="https://en.gamegpu.com/news/zhelezo/stoimost-yubilejnoj-versii-geforce-rtx-5090-v-roznitse-dostigla-12-000-usd" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">hit nearly $12,000 at Micro Center</a>. The standard ROG Astral lists at about $3,360, but amid a severe shortage it now <a href="https://pangoly.com/en/price-history/asus-rog-astral-geforce-rtx-5090-oc-edition" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">sells for roughly $4,800 to $9,600</a> at U.S. retailers, when it can be found at all.
In China, it’s rarer still, because the card isn’t supposed to be sold there at all.
U.S. export controls have kept Nvidia’s full RTX 5090 <a href="https://asiatimes.com/2026/05/beijing-bans-nvidias-top-graphics-card-to-back-domestic-rivals/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">out of China</a> since its January 2025 launch. Nvidia built a toned-down RTX 5090D for Chinese buyers, and Washington blocked that too. A further cut-down RTX 5090D V2 went on sale in August 2025. Then, in May 2026, <a href="https://asiatimes.com/?p=944359" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Beijing banned it</a> as China pushed buyers toward homegrown chips.
That leaves the RTX 5080 as the most powerful Nvidia gaming card Chinese consumers can buy through normal channels. Full 5090s still slip in through the gray market. Board maker MSI even <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/tag/rtx-5090/page/3" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">publicly denied ever selling the card in China</a> after pallets of them were spotted in the country.

This trend is not limited just to China.
In February 2026, a guest at a Turkish wedding <a href="https://mein-mmo.de/en/user-breaks-an-important-tradition-gives-away-a-graphics-card-ram-and-a-cpu-for-the-wedding-instead-of-gold,1552281/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">skipped the traditional gold jewelry</a>. He hung an RTX 5090 around the groom’s neck, draped DDR5 memory on the bride and added an Intel processor. With memory prices soaring, it may have been the shrewder investment.

For Nvidia, these viral moments highlight a gaming market in China that it is largely locked out of, caught between U.S. export rules and Chinese import bans.
Investors don’t seem bothered. Nvidia shares were <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/NVDA/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">roughly flat at about $217</a>&nbsp;Friday, Oct. 16, at press time. The company is valued at about $5.25 trillion.
Gold may hold its value. But gold doesn’t run Cyberpunk at 4K.
