The Solana Foundation’s “Accelerate China 2026” event at the Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai was suddenly suspended on the morning of October 16. Attendees were left outside as police officers cleared the venue and checked identification cards.
The disruption came after Solana launched a major marketing campaign in China. The campaign included a large light show on the Citibank Building in Lujiazui and the opening of a new office. These moves initially suggested that Solana was making progress in mainland China, where cryptocurrency activities face strict restrictions.

Following the police intervention, Solana Foundation President Lily Liu said the event was postponed because of unexpected overcrowding. She explained that registrations had quadrupled overnight.
However, industry figures questioned this explanation. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao publicly asked whether Solana’s organizers understood the strict requirements of local law enforcement. The shutdown has also raised doubts about whether the foundation’s remaining promotional events in China will go ahead.

Solana’s high-profile advertising campaign created the impression that the foundation had secured special permission from Shanghai authorities. However, that assumption was challenged when law enforcement arrived to clear the hotel.
X commenter @Lurenbian said the public had assumed Solana established private channels with Shanghai authorities. However, the foundation appeared to have relied on aggressive marketing without enough local guidance. Lurenbian also questioned why local teams, including the Solana Institute, had not warned the organizers about the potential risks. Solana’s leadership had been exploring the region since 2025.

Although the foundation presented the large turnout as a sign of strong interest, the explanation does not address the event’s operational problems.
Another commenter on X, David argued that losing control of venue entry was a serious compliance and safety risk, not a sign of success. He said genuine ecosystem growth depends on attracting and retaining developers and capital. That becomes difficult when organizers cannot properly manage basic event logistics and legal requirements.

@calilyliu 注册暴增说明传播有效，但“无力阻止入场”不是社区热情的勋章，而是合规与安全风险。注册人数也不等于生态增量，最终要看开发者、项目和资金能留下多少。

The consequences of the Shanghai shutdown could extend beyond one cancelled morning session. Mainland China has maintained a comprehensive ban on public token marketing and cryptocurrency business activities. Enforcement can also spread to other locations once authorities flag an organization or activity for scrutiny.
This is not the first time a Solana event has encountered regulatory difficulties in China. In 2025, a similar Solana gathering in Shenzhen was disrupted after police conducted an on-site inquiry.
This incident in Shanghai raises questions about whether the foundation has addressed the problems it faced the previous year. Experiencing a similar disruption twice suggests that its approach to local legal requirements may need significant improvement.
The Shanghai intervention has also created uncertainty around the remaining events scheduled for Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Beijing. Attendees are now considering the potential risks of attending cryptocurrency gatherings that may not have the necessary authorization.
X user Eric sj expressed concern about the remaining events, questioning whether they would proceed. He also noted that he had already committed an entire day to attend the upcoming Shenzhen event.
If authorities in other cities follow Shanghai’s approach, the Solana Foundation may have to restructure its entire Asia-Pacific outreach strategy to avoid further disruptions and public shutdowns.

Despite the ban, China’s central bank opened a digital yuan operations centre in Shanghai last year, focused on cross-border payments and blockchain services. The move aligns with China’s push to internationalize the yuan and reduce reliance on the US dollar.
