VanEck has asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for permission to withdraw its Lido Staked Ethereum ETF registration, according to a filing submitted to the regulator. The move removes one of the few pending proposals that would have combined spot Ethereum exposure with liquid staking through Lido, a structure that attracted close regulatory attention since it was first filed.

A Request to Withdraw, Not a Final Decision

The reported action is a procedural request to the SEC, not a confirmed approval of withdrawal. Under standard SEC practice, a registrant must petition the Commission to terminate a registration statement; the agency then determines whether to grant the request. Until the SEC acts, the registration remains technically active.
The available information does not state VanEck's reason for submitting the request. Possible explanations range from internal product-strategy decisions to regulatory feedback received during the review process, but none of those reasons have been confirmed. VanEck has previously shown active interest in crypto-linked products, including updating its VBNB ETF to add a BNB staking objective, which makes the Lido Staked Ethereum withdrawal notable by contrast.
The filing was submitted to the SEC's Electronic Filing system. The SEC's EDGAR full-text search index, available through EFTS, serves as the authoritative record of registered investment product filings and any amendments or withdrawal requests associated with them.

What the Withdrawal Request Means for the Proposed ETF

A withdrawal request signals that the sponsor no longer intends to pursue the product in its current form. It does not represent an SEC ruling on whether staked Ethereum ETFs are permissible, and it should not be read as a broader regulatory position on Ethereum staking products. The SEC has not issued formal guidance characterizing staking inside ETF wrappers as compliant or non-compliant.

The Lido Staked Ethereum product was distinct from the spot Ethereum ETFs that began trading in the United States in 2024. Those approved products hold Ethereum directly but do not include staking. A staked Ethereum ETF would have passed staking rewards to shareholders, a structure that introduces questions around securities classification that U.S. regulators have not publicly resolved. VanEck's team has commented separately on the broader digital asset landscape; its head of digital assets research Matthew Siegel has noted that Bitcoin could become a mainstream asset, reflecting the firm's ongoing engagement with the space even as specific product filings are adjusted.

What to Watch Next

The immediate next step is an SEC response to the withdrawal request. If the Commission grants it, an effective withdrawal notice will appear in the public filing record. If VanEck intends to refile under a revised structure, that would require a separate registration statement and would restart the review clock.

Any official statement from VanEck explaining its rationale would provide the clearest signal of whether the firm plans to return to a staking-inclusive Ethereum product or shift focus elsewhere. Regional exchanges in Southeast Asia, including platforms that list Ethereum-linked derivative products, will be watching whether other asset managers follow with similar withdrawal requests or whether any issuer moves forward with a revised staked Ethereum structure. A parallel filing from a competing issuer, such as the Grayscale Worldcoin ETF filing targeting Nasdaq, illustrates that crypto ETF activity in the United States continues on multiple fronts regardless of individual withdrawals.

For markets across Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore, the absence of a U.S.-listed staked Ethereum ETF keeps that particular yield-bearing structure out of the regulated product set that local institutions can reference when designing compliant offerings. The regulatory path for staking inside exchange-traded products remains unresolved, and VanEck's withdrawal request does not change that status either way.
