Grayscale, one of the largest crypto asset managers in the world, is teaming up with Republic to broaden investor access to funds focused on decentralized finance and artificial intelligence, the companies announced.

The partnership pairs Grayscale’s crypto fund lineup with Republic’s investment platform, with the stated goal of making DeFi and AI-themed crypto exposure available to a wider range of investors. Neither firm has published full terms, fee structures, or eligibility requirements at the time of writing. For related coverage, see Grayscale Zcash Trust begins NYSE trading Aug. 25.

Two Themes at the Center of the Deal

The partnership targets two of the most closely watched investment narratives in crypto: decentralized finance, which covers protocols that replicate financial services without banks or brokers, and artificial intelligence, which has become increasingly intertwined with on-chain infrastructure and token ecosystems. For related coverage, see AINext Awards & Conference Singapore 2026: Where AI Leaders, Innovators and Decision-Makers Shape the Future of Artificial Intelligence.

By naming both themes explicitly, Grayscale is signaling where it sees institutional appetite heading. The firm has previously expanded its fund roster to track emerging crypto sectors, including a Zcash trust that began NYSE trading and an updated Zcash ETF S-3 filing ahead of a potential NYSE Arca listing, reflecting a pattern of filing new products as market demand develops.

What Republic Brings to the Table

Republic is a fintech platform known for opening alternative investment categories, including private equity and real estate, to retail and accredited investors. Pairing that distribution reach with Grayscale’s crypto fund infrastructure could lower the practical barrier for investors who want thematic crypto exposure without managing wallets or self-custody.

Self-custody carries its own risks and obligations. France recently moved to impose fines of up to €10,000 for unreported self-custody holdings, underscoring why some investors prefer regulated fund wrappers over direct token ownership.

What Investors Should Watch For

The practical details that will determine the partnership’s real-world impact have not been confirmed. Investors should look for clarity on which specific Grayscale funds are included, whether access is limited to accredited investors, the fee structures involved, and any regulatory approvals required before distribution begins.

Thematic crypto funds, including those targeting DeFi and AI tokens, carry meaningful market risk. Token prices in both sectors have shown high volatility, and fund performance will depend heavily on which assets are selected and how the portfolio is weighted.

The T. Rowe Price move to add ADA to an active crypto ETF shows that traditional and alternative asset managers are increasingly willing to package crypto exposure for mainstream audiences. The Grayscale-Republic arrangement fits that pattern, but the specifics of what gets offered, and to whom, will define whether it moves the needle for investors seeking DeFi and AI exposure through regulated channels.

Will Republic’s retail reach be enough to make Grayscale’s thematic funds a mainstream product, or will accreditation requirements keep this firmly in institutional territory? The answer hinges on details the companies have yet to disclose.
