Ethereum traders faced a sharp wave of forced position closures on Binance after hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data unsettled cryptocurrency markets.
According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, Binance recorded more than $106 million in Ethereum long liquidations within a single hour.
The event marked the largest hourly liquidation of ETH long positions on the exchange in nearly six months.
Long liquidations occur when traders betting on rising prices can no longer maintain their leveraged positions, triggering forced closures.
When prices fall rapidly, these liquidations can intensify selling pressure and accelerate market declines.
The latest Binance ETH long liquidations highlight how quickly unexpected economic developments can affect heavily leveraged cryptocurrency traders.
<h2 id="crypto-futures-volume-reaches-nine-times-spot-trading">Crypto Futures Volume Reaches Nine Times Spot Trading</h2>
Darkfost also highlighted the growing dominance of derivatives trading in cryptocurrency markets.
According to his analysis, crypto futures trading volume is now approximately nine times spot trading volume.
This imbalance suggests that leveraged positions play a significant role in overall market activity.
Unlike spot trading, where investors purchase cryptocurrencies directly, futures contracts allow traders to gain exposure to price movements without owning the underlying assets.
Many futures traders use leverage to increase their market exposure.
Although leverage can amplify potential gains, it also increases the risk of rapid losses and forced liquidations.
When major economic announcements surprise investors, highly leveraged markets can react particularly sharply.
The recent Ethereum liquidation event demonstrates how quickly positions can unwind when market expectations shift.
However, a higher futures-to-spot trading ratio does not mean every derivatives position carries excessive leverage.

<h2 id="fed-rate-hike-fears-add-pressure-to-ethereum">Fed Rate Hike Fears Add Pressure to Ethereum</h2>
The surge in Binance ETH long liquidations came alongside rising concerns about U.S. monetary policy.
Darkfost reported that market expectations of another Federal Reserve interest rate hike increased from approximately 17% to nearly 30% within one week.
Hotter-than-expected inflation can strengthen expectations that policymakers will maintain tighter financial conditions or consider additional rate increases.
Higher interest rates can weigh on risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies, as investors reassess borrowing costs and potential returns.
For Ethereum traders, these shifting expectations added pressure to an already volatile derivatives market.
Still, the reported probability represents market expectations rather than a confirmed Federal Reserve decision.
The latest liquidation figures also do not establish whether Ethereum will continue declining or experience a recovery.
For now, the combination of inflation concerns, shifting rate expectations and substantial derivatives activity has exposed the risks facing leveraged crypto traders.
More than $106 million in ETH long liquidations in one hour serves as a reminder that sudden macroeconomic shocks can produce significant losses across cryptocurrency futures markets
