The exchange's new product will let users trade stock-linked tokens around the clock, though holders will not own actual shares.

Bybit has announced plans to launch mStocks next month, a new offering that brings tokenized equity trading to its platform. The product will allow users to trade digital tokens representing stock prices at any hour, breaking from the fixed schedules of traditional stock exchanges.

Tokenized equities are digital assets designed to track the price of an underlying stock. They are issued and traded on blockchain infrastructure rather than through conventional brokerage accounts. Bybit's mStocks will apply this model, giving traders exposure to equity price movements without requiring a traditional brokerage relationship.

A key detail distinguishes mStocks from direct stock ownership. Holders of these tokens will not actually own the underlying shares. They will not receive shareholder rights such as voting power or guaranteed dividend payments tied to company ownership. The tokens instead function as derivative-like instruments that mirror price performance.

The 24/7 trading window marks a significant departure from how equities normally change hands. Traditional stock markets operate within set hours tied to specific time zones and close on weekends and holidays. Bybit's move would let users react to news and price swings at any time, including outside standard market hours.

Tokenized stock products have drawn growing interest from crypto exchanges seeking to expand beyond digital assets. These offerings aim to attract traders who want equity exposure without leaving crypto-native platforms. The structure also appeals to users in regions where direct access to foreign stock markets can be limited or costly.

Regulatory treatment of tokenized equities remains inconsistent across jurisdictions. Some regulators have raised concerns about investor protections when products mimic stock ownership without conferring it. The distinction between owning a token tied to a stock's price and owning the stock itself carries legal and practical consequences that vary by region.

Bybit has not detailed which specific equities will be available through mStocks at launch, according to the reporting. The exchange's broader push into tokenized assets fits a wider industry trend of blending traditional finance products with blockchain-based trading infrastructure.

Market Impact

The launch of mStocks could intensify competition among crypto exchanges offering tokenized real-world assets. Several platforms have already experimented with stock-linked tokens, and Bybit's entry signals continued demand for round-the-clock equity exposure within crypto markets.

The lack of actual share ownership may shape how regulators and institutional players view the product. Clarity on custody, settlement, and investor protections will likely influence adoption, particularly among users accustomed to traditional brokerage safeguards.

Bybit's mStocks launch reflects the broader push to merge crypto trading infrastructure with equity markets. Its reception will depend on how clearly the exchange communicates the limits of token ownership to users.
