A newly disclosed flaw in the XRP Ledger's code could have allowed unauthorized token creation, prompting warnings about AI-assisted exploit discovery.

RippleX has disclosed a security flaw in the XRP Ledger that existed undetected for approximately ten years. The bug, according to the company, could have theoretically allowed an attacker to mint XRP outside the network's fixed supply rules. Ripple's development team says the vulnerability has since been patched, and no evidence has emerged that it was ever exploited.

Accounts of the flaw's scale vary across reporting. One outlet described the risk in terms of billions of XRP potentially being created. Another cited a theoretical maximum tied to the ledger's token-supply architecture, putting the figure as high as 18.45 trillion XRP. A third report framed the exposure in dollar terms, estimating roughly $94 billion in value could have been at stake. These differences reflect how the underlying mechanics of the bug can be measured, but all accounts agree the flaw touched the core mechanism governing XRP issuance.

The XRP Ledger was designed with a fixed total supply, a feature often cited as a selling point for the network's predictability. A bug that could circumvent that cap strikes at a foundational assumption underpinning XRP's value proposition. RippleX's disclosure comes alongside a broader warning about how artificial intelligence could change the threat landscape for blockchain security.

RippleX's concern centers on AI's growing capacity to scan source code for subtle logical errors. Tools capable of automated code analysis could, in theory, surface vulnerabilities that human auditors overlooked for years. The firm's warning suggests that the same technology making software development faster could also accelerate the discovery of exploitable flaws by malicious actors.

This is not the first time a major blockchain network has faced scrutiny over a dormant bug surviving years of audits. Such incidents typically prompt renewed calls for continuous code review and third-party security assessments. Ripple's disclosure follows a pattern seen elsewhere in crypto, where vulnerabilities are often found and patched quietly before public confirmation.

Ripple has not indicated that the bug was ever triggered on the live network. The company's statement appears intended to explain the patch's rationale while using the incident to highlight a forward-looking risk. By framing the episode around AI capabilities, RippleX is positioning the disclosure as part of a broader conversation about blockchain security practices rather than a one-off technical failure.

Market Impact

News of a patched vulnerability affecting XRP's supply integrity could unsettle holders who rely on the ledger's fixed-issuance design as a core value argument. Even without evidence of exploitation, disclosures involving potential unauthorized token creation tend to draw scrutiny from traders and institutional holders evaluating network risk.

The broader warning about AI-assisted vulnerability discovery may also influence how other blockchain projects approach security audits going forward. If AI tools can meaningfully speed up the identification of code flaws, development teams across the industry may face pressure to adopt more frequent and automated review cycles.

Ripple's disclosure underscores how even long-established blockchain networks can carry hidden vulnerabilities for years before detection. The episode adds to an industry-wide conversation about whether artificial intelligence will ultimately help defenders more than attackers, or the reverse.

CryptoSlate reports that the flaw, uncovered by an AI security agent, could have allowed a single transaction to mint 18 trillion XRP—roughly 180 times the token’s original supply—against a market currently valued at $94 billion. The outlet also reports that developers bypassed the XRP Ledger’s established governance process to push an emergency fix before the bug could be exploited.

Update 12 Oct 2026, 02:06 UTC · added by Bitcoin.com News

Bitcoin.com News reports that Ripple says the flaw was fixed before it could be exploited, and that XRP’s fixed supply was never actually compromised. The outlet adds that Ripple’s engineering team is now expanding its use of AI-assisted testing alongside mathematical verification checks specifically to surface other longstanding weaknesses as such vulnerability discovery accelerates.
