Red candles everywhere. If you opened your portfolio this morning, your stomach probably dropped before you even read the numbers. Why is crypto down today? The short answer is that several things hit at once, and none of them are small on their own. A rate hike in India, a quiet government wallet move in the US, and a wave of ETF outflows all landed on the same day.
Here's what actually happened, and what could move the market next.
Key Takeaways

Bitcoin price today fell below $84,000 and Ethereum slipped near $2,600, pulling the total crypto market cap down to $2.93 trillion.

Traders lost over $609 million in 24 hours through forced liquidations, while Ethereum ETFs posted their biggest single day outflow this month.

A fresh RBI rate hike to 5.50% and a large US government Bitcoin transfer added pressure just as traders wait on today's Fed minutes.

Bitcoin dominance stands at 57.4% and Ethereum dominance at 10.8%, so this isn't a one coin story. It's a broad risk off move across the entire board.

US government linked wallets moved 833.6 BTC worth about $71.6 million, plus 40,285 BNB worth roughly $31.6 million, according to on chain analyst EmberCN on Lookonchain. The BTC landed in Coinbase Prime, a move that usually points toward a future sale rather than long term storage.

These wallets still hold close to $28 billion in crypto, including about 324,000 BTC worth $27.7 billion. Even a small slice of that reserve hitting an exchange is enough to make traders nervous, because it hints that more large government holdings could follow the same path soon.

2. RBI's Surprise Rate Hike Hit Risk Appetite

The Reserve Bank of India raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, its first hike since February 2023. The Marginal Standing Facility and Bank Rate moved to 5.75%, and the Standing Deposit Facility rate now sits at 5.25%. RBI projects 7.1% GDP growth and 5.2% CPI inflation for 2026-27.
India holds the top spot globally in crypto adoption, per chainalysis data, so this rate decision is one of the clearest answers to why is crypto down today across Indian trading desks. Higher rates make safe assets like deposits more attractive, which pulls money away from riskier bets like crypto almost immediately.

3. Ethereum and Solana ETFs Saw Heavy Outflows

As per SoSoValue data, Ethereum ETFs recorded a net outflow of $201.89 million on October 6, the biggest single day pullback this month, led almost entirely by BlackRock. Cumulative inflows still total $13.55 billion, with $17.36 billion in net assets, about 5.27% of Ethereum's market cap.

Solana ETFs posted a third October outflow too, losing $3.68 million, mostly from Grayscale, though Invesco added a small $60.54 thousand inflow. When institutional money pulls back like this, it signals short term caution from the very funds that have been driving demand all year.

4. Liquidations Wiped Out Over $600 Million in Hours

According to CoinGlass data, 106,324 traders got liquidated in the past 24 hours, with total losses reaching $609.93 million. Long positions accounted for $547.10 million of that, meaning most traders were betting on a bounce that never came.
The single largest order was a $26.64 million ETHUSDC liquidation on Binance. Liquidation waves like this tend to feed on themselves. Falling prices trigger forced selling, which pushes prices lower, which triggers more selling, turning an ordinary dip into a sharper crash within hours.

5. Trade Deficit Data and a Wallet Hack Added to the Gloom

Commentator Peter Schiff pointed out that the US trade deficit rose to $105.6 billion in August, up from a revised $92.8 billion in July, among the largest monthly deficits on record. That kind of macro data unsettles broader risk markets, crypto included.
On top of that, trader Frogman reported losing close to $4 million across several wallets to a hack, with stolen tokens swapped into ETH, BNB, and SOL. News like this adds to an already fearful mood, and fear tends to accelerate selling rather than slow it down.

What's Next for the Crypto Market?

Today's Fed Minutes meeting is the next big catalyst, and it may finally answer why is crypto down today in a way traders can act on. The FOMC Minutes from the September 15-16 meeting release at 2:00 p.m., alongside Commercial Paper data at 1:00 p.m., Consumer Credit (G.19) at 3:00 p.m., and Selected Interest Rates (H.15) at 4:15 p.m.
Any signal on future rate direction from these releases could decide whether today's crash deepens or starts to stabilize. Until then, expect more volatility rather than less.
Expert Opinion: Market analysts note that today's drop looks less like a single shock and more like several pressures landing together. A central bank rate hike, large on chain transfers, ETF outflows, and heavy liquidations rarely line up on the same day by accident.
Analysts suggest the next market move depends heavily on how the Fed minutes are interpreted, since rate expectations have been the main driver behind risk asset flows this year. A calm reading could slow the slide, while a hawkish one could extend it further.

Conclusion

So, why is crypto down today? It comes down to a rare pileup: an RBI rate hike, a large government Bitcoin transfer, ETF outflows, and over $609 million in liquidations all hitting on the same day. The next few hours, especially the Fed minutes at 2:00 p.m., will likely decide if this crash deepens or starts to cool off.
