The company behind the popular Pudgy Penguins NFT collection is <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/10/07/pudgy-penguins-abstract-becomes-second-ethereum-layer-2-to-shut-in-a-week" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">pulling the plug</a> on its Abstract blockchain network. Igloo Inc. announced the platform will permanently cease operations on December 15, 2026.

Abstract functions as a layer-2 scaling solution built on top of Ethereum. These networks handle transactions at lower costs before bundling them and submitting final proofs to Ethereum’s main chain for security.
This marks the second major Ethereum layer-2 network failure in just seven days. Blast revealed its own shutdown plans on October 2.
According to Igloo CEO Luca Netz, the company bankrolled Abstract’s operations for roughly a year and a half. The venture drained tens of millions from Igloo’s coffers during this period.
While Netz acknowledged the team explored alternative funding routes including token launches and initial coin offerings, they ultimately rejected these approaches.

Netz identified the core issue as Abstract’s inability to achieve product-market fit. He cited stagnant user growth, shallow liquidity pools, and minimal uptake from institutional players.

Abstract to Shut Down on Dec. 15; Igloo Says It Lost Tens of Millions Over Two Years

The platform struggled particularly in the decentralized finance sector. DeFi encompasses blockchain-based financial applications that operate without traditional intermediaries like banks.
Ironically, this weakness stemmed from an early strategic decision. When Abstract launched, Netz actively discouraged developers from building financial applications on the platform.
Instead, he advocated for a consumer-centric approach focused on entertainment and accessible products. He even publicly suggested DeFi developers deploy their projects on competing chains such as Berachain or Arbitrum.
The network went live with its mainnet in January 2025. Igloo’s strategy centered on leveraging the massive brand recognition of Pudgy Penguins to introduce mainstream audiences to cryptocurrency.
Pudgy Penguins originated as an NFT project featuring whimsical penguin artwork. These non-fungible tokens represent unique digital assets with verifiable blockchain-based ownership.
The franchise successfully expanded beyond digital collectibles, establishing a physical presence with licensed products available at major retailers including Walmart and Target stores nationwide.

Throughout its operational period, Abstract processed upwards of 325 million individual transactions. The network facilitated approximately $6 billion worth of trading volume across decentralized exchanges.
Platform analytics showed roughly 4 million unique wallet addresses. Developers launched more than 144 distinct applications on the network, attracting over 400,000 onboarded users.
Applications built on Abstract collectively generated over $40 million in revenues. High-profile corporate partners included entertainment giant Disney and motorsports organization Red Bull Racing.
However, application revenue doesn’t translate directly into blockchain sustainability. Abstract’s income model relied on collecting minimal fees from each transaction—insufficient to cover operational expenses.
According to DefiLlama analytics, Abstract captured approximately $3,900 in protocol fees during a recent 24-hour measurement period. By comparison, applications operating on the network earned roughly $39,000 in that identical timeframe.
As of Wednesday, DefiLlama’s bridged value metric showed Abstract still custodied approximately $76 million in user assets. Igloo has instructed users to withdraw holdings via the Migration Hub or Native Bridge before the December 15 cutoff.
Assets remaining on Abstract past the shutdown date will become permanently stranded and irretrievable. Igloo committed to assisting projects with migration to alternative blockchain ecosystems.
Abstract joins a growing list of blockchain networks that failed to sustain operations in 2025. Bitcoin-oriented platform Botanix closed its doors in June, citing similar product-market fit challenges.
