Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund has completed a $5 million acquisition of governance tokens from Anvil, an Ethereum-based decentralized finance protocol focused on digital asset collateralization. Rather than purchasing equity stakes, the venture capital firm acquired ANVL tokens directly.

The token purchase, revealed on Monday, included participation from Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish, and Protoscale Capital. Details regarding specific valuation metrics remained undisclosed.
According to statements provided to <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2026/10/06/peter-thiel-backed-founders-fund-leads-a-usd5-million-token-buy-in-crypto-collateral-protocol-anvil" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">CoinDesk</a>, Anvil confirmed the tokens originated from the protocol’s existing treasury reserves rather than being newly minted.
Built on the Ethereum blockchain, Anvil enables digital assets to serve as collateral backing payment obligations and credit guarantees in business-to-business transactions.
Concurrent with the token sale, Anvil Research Labs unveiled a software development kit designed to simplify protocol integration. According to the company, this toolkit allows enterprises to leverage Anvil’s infrastructure without requiring in-house blockchain development capabilities.
Joey Krug, partner at Founders Fund, emphasized that commercial entities require assurance that payment and credit obligations will be fulfilled. He noted that Anvil provides a mechanism for backing such commitments with verifiable digital collateral.
<h3 id="how-anvil-works">How Anvil Works</h3>
The protocol’s fundamental mechanism mimics traditional letters of credit through blockchain technology. Conventional finance relies on banks to guarantee payments contingent upon specific conditions being satisfied.
Anvil substitutes banking intermediaries with automated smart contracts. Participants deposit assets such as ETH or USDC into secure vaults, with that collateral underwriting guarantees rather than facilitating loans.
The system operates without charging interest or enabling borrowing. Additionally, Anvil imposes no fees at the protocol layer.
Recent governance decisions broadened the roster of acceptable collateral types. The system now supports EURC, cbBTC, sUSDe, WBTC, and wstETH alongside existing options.
Regarding security measures, Anvil has undergone audits conducted by OpenZeppelin and Trail of Bits. The protocol has also executed two bug bounty initiatives through the Immunefi platform.

The protocol went live in January 2025. Initially developed as an open-source initiative by the Acronym Foundation, Anvil operated without external capital in its early phase.
Current total value locked ranges between $10 million and $14 million across different tracking platforms. This represents a significant decline from the July 2025 peak of approximately $109 million.
The ANVL token features a maximum supply of 100 billion units. Current circulation estimates range from 80 to 88 billion tokens, with approximately 60% distributed to partners and community participants.
Tyler Spalding, who previously co-founded crypto payments provider Flexa, established the protocol. Spalding has stated that Anvil’s architecture produces guarantees while mitigating certain default vulnerabilities inherent in conventional financial systems.
Anvil Research Labs identified multiple organizations currently utilizing or evaluating its technology, including Consensus, Bitcoin.com, and Flexa. Bullish, which owns CoinDesk, is investigating potential applications of the protocol within its operational framework.
The wider DeFi lending ecosystem dwarfs Anvil’s current scale. Combined DeFi lending protocols manage approximately $56 billion in assets, with Aave and Morpho dominating the sector, per DefiLlama data.
