Metaplanet sold 10,000 Bitcoin during the July-to-September quarter and later repurchased 11,000 BTC, according to an Oct. 5 exchange filing. The Japanese BTC treasury company said the round-trip transaction was designed to prove its Bitcoin reserves could be converted to cash in an amount exceeding the principal of its interest-bearing debt.

Metaplanet sold 10,000 BTC at a preliminary unaudited average of ¥12,470,098 per coin, generating roughly ¥124.7 billion in proceeds. The company held that cash, demonstrating that the liquid value of its Bitcoin position exceeded its outstanding interest-bearing bond and loan principal, before executing a separate repurchase.

The repurchase came at a higher average price of ¥13,626,928 per BTC, roughly 9% above the sale price.
As of Sept. 30, Metaplanet held 44,000 BTC on its balance sheet, a net quarterly gain of 1,000 BTC despite the temporary drawdown. Bitcoin was trading near $85,690 at press time, up 0.35% on the day.

Why Reserves Versus Debt Matters for Credit

The stated goal was to pursue a formal credit rating, which would open the door to bond issuance, preferred-stock offerings, and Bitcoin-backed financing. Rating agencies and fixed-income investors typically require evidence that a borrower can service and repay obligations; Metaplanet's filing said the transaction was specifically designed to show it could liquidate Bitcoin reserves when obligations come due.
The demonstration did not involve repaying the debt itself. Metaplanet held the ¥124.7 billion in cash as proof of monetization capacity, then redeployed it into the larger repurchase. The company also estimated a potential U.S. deferred tax asset of about $97 million from the capital loss recorded on the sale, though the filing noted the amount is subject to auditor review and may not be recognized.

This approach contrasts with at least one other U.S. Bitcoin treasury company that sold its entire BTC position under debt and Nasdaq pressure. Metaplanet's round-trip structure kept its net treasury intact while satisfying the liquidity demonstration requirement. Similarly, other firms have faced weak investor demand for Bitcoin treasury income products, making a verifiable credit rating increasingly important for capital-markets access.

TLDR Keypoints

10,000 BTC sold in Q3: Metaplanet temporarily liquidated the position at an average of ¥12,470,098 per coin to generate ¥124.7 billion in cash, a sum it said exceeded its interest-bearing debt principal.

Liquidity demonstration, not debt repayment: The company held the proceeds without retiring any debt, then separately repurchased 11,000 BTC at ¥13,626,928 per coin, a roughly 9% premium over the sale price.

Credit-rating pursuit ongoing: Metaplanet said the transaction supports its effort to obtain a formal credit rating for future financing; the $97 million deferred tax asset estimate and the final audited figures remain subject to review.

Metaplanet's prior 2,823 BTC purchase signaled an aggressive accumulation stance; the Q3 round-trip adds a new layer by treating the treasury as an active instrument for credit-market positioning, not just a passive hold. Investors watching the broader institutional Bitcoin flow picture will likely track whether the credit-rating bid succeeds and triggers a fresh wave of corporate BTC-backed debt issuance.
