Blast, an Ethereum layer-2 network (a faster, cheaper blockchain built on top of Ethereum), has announced it will shut down permanently. The team is urging users to move their assets back to Ethereum's main network before October 26, 2026, when normal withdrawal access ends.

Blast said the decision came down to money. According to the official announcement on X, the ongoing costs of maintaining the network outpaced the revenue the chain generated. The team said it saw no realistic way to make the business sustainable.
The numbers explain the gap clearly. CoinDesk reported that Blast generated just $1,793 in chain revenue last month. Its total value locked, meaning the total amount of user funds on the network, had fallen from a peak above $2 billion in June 2024 to around $32 million, a drop of roughly 98%.
Blast is asking all users to withdraw their funds, including balances held in the Blast Progressive Web App (PWA), back to Ethereum's main network. The normal Blast withdrawal interface will remain available until October 26, 2026.

After October 26, users can still recover their funds, but they will need to interact directly with Blast's bridge contracts on Ethereum's main network. A bridge contract is an automated program that holds assets and releases them when withdrawal conditions are met. Blast said it will publish instructions for this process before the cutoff date.

There is one temporary complication. Blast said withdrawals will be paused for approximately one week while the team unwinds assets held in Lido, a staking protocol. Once that process is complete, Blast plans to reduce the standard withdrawal delay to 24 hours.

Cointelegraph independently confirmed the Lido unwind process, the 24-hour delay plan, and the shift to direct bridge-contract withdrawals after the normal interface shuts down. This shutdown is an operator-led wind-down with no regulatory filings or enforcement actions involved.

This is not the first time the Blast shutdown story has surfaced. The network's revenue collapse has been widely noted across the crypto industry as the broader crypto security and sustainability conversation has intensified in 2026.

What Blast Users Should Do Now

If you hold funds on Blast, the most important step is to begin the withdrawal process before October 26. Use the standard Blast interface while it is still available, keeping in mind there will be a temporary pause of about one week while Lido assets are processed.

After the cutoff, your funds are not lost. They remain accessible through the bridge contracts on Ethereum's main network. However, that process requires more technical steps, so acting before the deadline is the simpler path.

Watch official Blast communications for the direct bridge-contract withdrawal instructions the team has promised to publish. Do not rely on third-party guides until those official instructions are live. Verify any withdrawal address or tool directly against the official Blast channels before sending funds.
