<p>Anyone who wanted to try out a new blockchain a few years ago needed patience: open the wallet, look for “add network”, type in the RPC address, chain ID, currency symbol and explorer by hand, and hope you had not made a typo. In 2026 that is no longer necessary in most cases. Wallets know the important networks by themselves, applications ask when you connect, and balances often move from one chain to another without a classic bridge.</p>
<p>This guide shows you when you still have to add a network yourself and how to stay safe while doing it, how to check your transactions with a block explorer such as Etherscan, whether you need bridges at all any more, and what the new smart accounts change. At the end there is a checklist for your first transfer to a new chain.</p>
<h2 id="do-you-still-have-to-add-networks">Do you still have to add networks?</h2>
<p>For the large networks: mostly not any more. MetaMask, the most widely used wallet for Ethereum and related chains, now works with what are called multichain accounts. A single recovery phrase then manages accounts for Ethereum and compatible networks, for Solana, for Bitcoin and, since January 2026, for Tron as well. The common networks are already stored, and the wallet shows your balance across all active networks together. MetaMask decides per application which network is in use, so you no longer have to switch by hand all the time.</p>
<p>Today you mainly have to add a network yourself in two cases: with new chains that your wallet does not yet know, and with smaller chains, for instance a dedicated chain for a particular ecosystem such as ApeChain. There are two convenient ways to do it:</p>
<ul>
 <li><strong>Through the application:</strong> many decentralised applications ask when you connect whether they may enter the matching network into your wallet. You confirm with one click.</li>
 <li><strong>Through Chainlist:</strong> the site chainlist.org collects the data of thousands of networks. You search for the network, connect your wallet and have it entered.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="what-to-watch-out-for-when-adding-a-network">What to watch out for when adding a network</h2>
<p>A network in your wallet is more than an entry in a list. The RPC address determines which server your wallet talks to. A malicious server can show you false balances or record your activity. So the rules are:</p>
<ol>
 <li><strong>Compare the chain ID.</strong> Every chain has a unique number; for Ethereum it is 1. If the number in the request does not match the one on the official project page, you stop.</li>
 <li><strong>Never take network data from chats.</strong> RPC addresses from Telegram groups, Discord messages or comments are a well-known route for fraud.</li>
 <li><strong>Match the request against the site.</strong> If a site asks for a network that has nothing to do with its subject, caution is in order.</li>

<h2 id="how-to-read-a-block-explorer-like-etherscan">How to read a block explorer like Etherscan</h2>
<p>A block explorer is the bank statement of a blockchain. Every transaction, every address and every contract can be viewed publicly there. You enter a wallet address, a transaction ID or a contract address and you see what happened. It is the first place to look when a transfer “does not arrive”.</p>
<p>Every chain has its own explorer. The most important ones at a glance, as of September 2026:</p>

<p>Type the addresses in yourself or use a bookmark. Fake explorer pages that show up through search ads are a widespread phishing trick.</p>

<h2 id="the-four-explorer-fields-that-matter">The four explorer fields that matter</h2>
<ul>
 <li><strong>Status:</strong> “Success” means the transaction has gone through. “Pending” means it is still waiting. “Failed” means it has failed, and the fee is gone all the same.</li>
 <li><strong>Fee:</strong> shows what you paid for the transaction. On Ethereum it fluctuates sharply; on networks such as Base or Arbitrum it is usually a fraction of a cent.</li>
 <li><strong>Token transfers:</strong> which tokens went from where to where. This is where you see whether you really received what you bought.</li>
 <li><strong>Approvals:</strong> every permission you have given a contract to move your tokens is a transaction too. These entries are the biggest everyday risk, and there is more on them below.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="do-you-still-need-bridges-in-2026">Do you still need bridges in 2026?</h2>
<p>A bridge moves balances from one blockchain to another. For a long time that was the only way, and it was slow, expensive and risky: bridges are among the most frequently hacked applications in the crypto market. How quickly that can happen was shown by the incident at the Sandbox bridge in August, which we reported on.</p>
<p>In 2026 there is a simpler route for most everyday cases: so-called intent protocols. You only say what you want, for example “100 USDC from Arbitrum to Base”. A network of providers fills the order out of their own holdings on the target chain and then recovers the money on the origin chain. Well-known services for this are Across and Relay. For you the switch then often takes seconds instead of minutes or days.</p>

<p>The classic, official bridge of a chain nevertheless remains important, in three cases:</p>
<ol>
 <li><strong>Large amounts:</strong> here the official route is often cheaper and does not depend on other people’s holdings.</li>
 <li><strong>New chains:</strong> with young networks such as the Robinhood Chain there is often only the official bridge at first.</li>
 <li><strong>Withdrawals from layer 2 networks:</strong> anyone going back to Ethereum through the official bridge of Arbitrum or Optimism waits up to seven days. <p>How risky the end of a bridge can become was also shown recently by the TON ecosystem, when a bridge was switched off and holders had a deadline. <h2 id="understanding-smart-accounts-with-eip-7702">Understanding smart accounts with EIP-7702</h2>
<p>Since the Ethereum upgrade Pectra in May 2025 there has been a change that you may already have seen in your wallet as a switch: the smart account under the EIP-7702 standard. It temporarily turns your ordinary account into a programmable account without your needing a new address.</p>
<p>That brings you three advantages: several steps such as “grant approval” and “swap” run in a single confirmation. An application can cover your fee. And you can pay fees in tokens other than ETH. In MetaMask the smart account can be switched on and off again according to the help page.</p>
<p>The downside: when you switch it on you delegate your account to a contract. Fraudsters therefore try to slip you a delegation to their own contract. Only ever confirm a switch to a smart account directly in your wallet, never at the prompting of a website you do not know.</p>
<h2 id="checking-and-revoking-token-approvals">Checking and revoking token approvals</h2>
<p>The biggest everyday risk is not hacks at large exchanges but old approvals. Every time you swap on a decentralised exchange or list an NFT, you allow a contract to move certain tokens out of your wallet. That permission often continues without limit, even when you stopped using the application long ago.</p>
<p>How expensive that can become is shown by the incident around Magic Eden and Limit Break since September 24, 2026: attackers are using approvals from 2024 and have drained WETH and NFTs that way. A proven tool for this is Revoke.cash, which by its own account covers more than 100 networks. Revoking costs a small fee and is the cheapest insurance there is.</p>
<p>Anyone holding larger amounts is best off separating two wallets: one for everyday use that talks to applications, and one for savings that never signs anything. The second belongs on a hardware wallet. <h2 id="checklist-for-your-first-transfer-to-a-new-chain">Checklist for your first transfer to a new chain</h2>
<ol>
 <li><strong>Check the network:</strong> does your wallet already know the chain? If not, enter it through the official project page or Chainlist and compare the chain ID.</li>
 <li><strong>Get the fee token:</strong> on most networks you pay in ETH, on some in a dedicated token such as APE on ApeChain. Without it nothing works on that chain.</li>
 <li><strong>Choose the route:</strong> small amounts through an intent service, large ones through the official bridge.</li>
 <li><strong>Test transfer:</strong> send a small amount first and check in the explorer whether it has arrived.</li>
 <li><strong>Bookmark the explorer:</strong> save the address of the right explorer once and never call it up through search ads.</li>
 <li><strong>Tidy up:</strong> after using a new application, check the approvals you granted and revoke what you no longer need.</li>
</ol>

<h2 id="our-conclusion-on-moving-between-blockchains">Our conclusion on moving between blockchains</h2>
<p>Moving between blockchains is easier in 2026 than it has ever been: wallets know the large networks, intent services replace the bridge in everyday use, and smart accounts save clicks. At the same time the attack surface has grown, because every new chain, every approval and every delegation can be a door. Once you have internalised the checklist above, you can move safely, whether on Ethereum, Base, the Robinhood Chain or ApeChain.</p>
