(HPQ) shares retreated by as much as 3.6% during Monday’s premarket session following the technology company’s cautionary outlook regarding personal computer demand. The stock finished Friday’s regular trading at $34.40, posting a 0.75% decline.

According to a regulatory disclosure filed Monday, the technology manufacturer anticipates that global PC unit shipments will decrease by a mid-single-digit percentage during calendar year 2027 when measured against 2026 levels. This represents a planning estimate that HP is currently using for strategic purposes.
Notably absent from the filing was comprehensive fiscal 2027 guidance. The corporation explained that its annual planning cycle is still ongoing and that issuing detailed financial projections would be premature at this juncture.
This stance mirrors remarks delivered during HP’s August 26 earnings conference call. Chief Financial Officer Karen Parkhill indicated during that discussion that providing concrete fiscal year targets was not yet appropriate given the timing.

HP indicated that its planning scenario aligns with prevailing third-party industry forecasts currently available. However, the company emphasized that marketplace dynamics during the latter portion of 2026 remain uncertain and could necessitate adjustments to these working assumptions.
Memory chip availability constraints have emerged as a significant challenge confronting personal computer manufacturers. Additionally, escalating component pricing has prompted manufacturers to shift toward strategies emphasizing lower volumes at premium price points.
These increased input expenses are creating margin compression within HP’s Personal Systems division. Company leadership addressed these operational challenges during their most recent quarterly earnings discussion with analysts.
The cautionary statement comes after HPQ experienced considerable volatility throughout September. Shares surged nearly 6% on September 17 before retreating 0.75% in Friday’s session.
On September 18, HPQ settled at $34.40 after fluctuating within a range of $33.76 to $35.15. Trading activity reached approximately 35.5 million shares during the regular session.

HP’s choice to defer providing guidance should not be interpreted as a retraction of previously communicated fiscal 2027 projections. The reality is that no such formal outlook has been released yet, and the company’s standard planning procedures remain in progress.
Market participants will be closely monitoring how HP intends to counterbalance rising memory and component expenses. Corporate officials have committed to sharing additional details regarding cost-mitigation strategies when they report fiscal fourth-quarter performance.
Pricing dynamics will remain critical if manufacturers continue experiencing reduced PC shipment volumes. While higher average selling prices might partially compensate for declining unit sales, elevated production costs can still erode profitability.
The cautionary statement specifically addresses anticipated industry-wide PC unit volumes rather than HP-specific sales projections. The company’s current working assumption envisions the overall market contracting at a mid-single-digit pace throughout 2027.
HP further emphasized that its 2027 planning assumptions remain subject to revision based on demand patterns that emerge during the remainder of 2026. Consequently, management has refrained from establishing definitive fiscal-year revenue or earnings benchmarks at the present time.
Investors can expect comprehensive financial guidance when HP releases its fiscal fourth-quarter results. That forthcoming report will provide greater clarity regarding cost management initiatives, component pricing trends, and management’s refined expectations for the 2027 personal computer marketplace.
