The <a href="https://blockonomi.com/argentinas-peso-crypto-trading-goes-94-stablecoins-a16z-finds/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">a16z-backed</a> Layer-1 project said nearly $900,000 in commitments fell below the required threshold.
All contributions were refunded, while emergency financing efforts also failed to provide enough capital. Linera will now wind down its application and Discord community, although the team still hopes to finish its protocol.

The Linera shutdown centers on a funding shortfall rather than a technical failure, according to the team. Its <a href="https://blockonomi.com/sonar-announces-the-launch-of-sonar-studio-v-0-3/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Sonar</a> token sale attracted nearly $900,000 in commitments but did not reach the minimum required to close.
A more specific report puts the community round at $848,271 from 617 participants. The sale required $1.5 million, meaning the funding fell materially below its stated threshold.
Because the minimum was not reached, the sale did not close. Linera therefore refunded the contributions instead of proceeding with the token distribution.
The team then sought emergency financing to continue development toward mainnet. Those efforts failed, leaving Linera without sufficient funding to maintain operations.
Linera’s shutdown also affects its users and community. The application is being wound down, while the Discord server will eventually close.
User points will remain recorded, but the team made no promise about their future value. That means existing points do not currently represent guaranteed tokens or financial benefits.
For users, the distinction between refunded contributions and points is important. Funds committed through the failed sale were returned, while point balances remain subject to an uncertain future.

Linera’s funding history makes the shutdown particularly notable within the Layer-1 sector. The project raised approximately $12 million across two funding rounds announced in 2022 and 2023.
The first $6 million round was led by a16z Crypto in 2022. Linera then raised another $6 million in 2023, with Borderless Capital leading the round.
a16z Crypto continued participating in the second round alongside investors including Flow Traders, GSR, <a href="https://coincentral.com/matrixport-bitcoins-price-surge-to-105k-may-be-tested-soon/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Matrixport</a>, and Laser Digital.
Linera was founded by Mathieu Baudet, a former Meta researcher involved with the company’s Novi-related research. Its architecture focused on microchains designed to support scalable blockchain applications.
Microchains separate activity across smaller chains instead of forcing every transaction through one shared execution stream. Linera presented this architecture as a way to improve responsiveness and support large amounts of simultaneous activity.
However, the project’s earlier venture funding did not provide enough runway to reach its planned mainnet launch. The failed token sale further reduced its ability to continue development.
The team said it still hopes to complete the protocol and eventually launch applications. However, it provided no timeline for restarting operations.
For traders and investors, the immediate takeaway is straightforward. Linera’s token sale failed to meet its funding threshold, contributions were refunded, and active operations are now being wound down.
