<a style="text-decoration:none" href="https://bsc.news/post/polygon-ethereum-layer-2-scaling-analysis" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Polygon</a>'s Gigagas roadmap aims to scale its proof-of-stake (PoS) chain to 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) by 2026, and as of mid-2026 the network has reached a peak capacity of around 5,000 TPS, roughly 5 percent of that target. It has not yet matched Visa's own disclosed peak capacity of more than 65,000 TPS.&nbsp;The project is not finished. It is moving through stages, each shipped live on mainnet before the next one starts.<h2 id="span-span-strong-what-is-the-gigagas-roadmap-strong-span-span">What Is the Gigagas Roadmap?</h2>Gigagas is Polygon's multi-phase plan to scale its PoS chain for payments, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs). Sandeep Nailwal, CEO of the Polygon Foundation, announced the roadmap in June 2025 alongside a broader shift away from Polygon zkEVM and toward Polygon PoS and Agglayer, its cross-chain interoperability layer.The plan runs in three stages:<ul><li>Reach 1,000 TPS with roughly 5-second finality</li><li>Scale past 5,000 TPS with fast block times and no chain reorganizations</li><li>Push beyond 100,000 TPS while keeping fees under a cent</li></ul><h2 id="span-span-strong-how-far-has-polygon-actually-gotten-strong-span-span">How Far Has Polygon Actually Gotten?</h2>Rather than one big-bang launch, Polygon has raised its block gas limit in a long series of steps, each one live on mainnet.<h3 id="span-span-strong-the-upgrade-by-upgrade-progression-strong-span-span">The Upgrade-by-Upgrade Progression</h3>The gas limit, which caps how much a block can process, has climbed steadily:<ul><li>45M (Bhilai, July 2025) — passed 1,000 TPS, added EIP-7702 account abstraction</li><li>60M (Rio, October 2025) — introduced the Validator-Elected Block Producer (VEBloP) model, which assigns block production to a single elected leader per slot instead of multiple validators racing to produce the same block, cutting reorg risk</li><li>90M to 110M (February 2026) — pushed peak throughput past 2,600 TPS, about 10 percent of the full Gigagas target</li><li>140M (May 2026) — raised peak throughput to roughly 3,800 TPS</li><li>160M (mid-2026) — brought peak capacity to about 5,000 payments per second, hitting the medium-term milestone Polygon set back in 2025</li></ul><h3 id="span-span-strong-reliability-work-alongside-capacity-strong-span-span">Reliability Work Alongside Capacity</h3>Capacity is only half the roadmap. Heimdall v2 cut finality from one to two minutes down to about 5 seconds. The Ithaca upgrade, activated on mainnet on July 29-30, 2026, added automatic failover so the chain keeps processing payments if a block producer stalls, plus filters to block oversized transactions. It was Polygon's fourth mainnet upgrade in under five months, following Lisovo, Giugliano, and Zurich. A separate security hard fork on August 27, 2026, patched a validator vulnerability and denial-of-service risks before either could be exploited.It is worth separating two different numbers here: peak capacity (what the network could theoretically clear at full blocks) and real-time throughput (what it processes under normal, non-peak conditions).&nbsp;Polygon's day-to-day load typically runs far below its peak ceiling, in the range of double-digit to low-hundreds of TPS, which is normal for any network that provisions headroom for demand spikes rather than running blocks full all the time.<h2 id="span-span-strong-does-visa-actually-use-polygon-now-strong-span-span">Does Visa Actually Use Polygon Now?</h2>Yes, in a specific, limited way. On April 29, 2026, Visa added Polygon to its global stablecoin settlement program, alongside Coinbase's Base, Circle's Arc, Canton Network, and Stripe-backed Tempo. This lets Visa's card issuers and acquirers settle transactions in stablecoins on Polygon rather than waiting on traditional banking rails, which matters for weekend and holiday settlement windows when banks are closed. Visa said the broader stablecoin settlement pilot, spanning nine networks, had reached a $7 billion annualized run rate at the time, up 50 percent from the prior quarter.This is a real commercial integration, not a projection. It does not mean Polygon is processing Visa-scale card payment volume; it means Visa picked Polygon as one settlement rail among several for a specific stablecoin use case.<h2 id="span-span-strong-what-is-standing-in-the-way-of-100-000-tps-strong-span-span">What is Standing in the Way of 100,000 TPS?</h2><h3 id="span-span-strong-validator-concentration-strong-span-span">Validator Concentration</h3>Polygon PoS runs on roughly 105 validators as of the most recent published count, a small set compared to&nbsp;<a style="text-decoration:none" href="https://bsc.news/post/what-is-ethereum-eth-how-it-works-explained" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ethereum</a>'s thousands. VEBloP's single-leader-per-slot model is efficient, but it also concentrates block production responsibility on whichever validator is elected at a given moment, which keeps the decentralization trade-off in view as throughput climbs.<h3 id="span-span-strong-distance-left-on-the-roadmap-strong-span-span">Distance Left on the Roadmap</h3>Going from 5,000 TPS to 100,000 TPS is not a small final step. Each prior 2 to 3x jump in capacity has taken months of incremental gas-limit increases and multiple hard forks. Reaching the full target likely requires further changes to block production, state management, and possibly validator hardware requirements, none of which have shipped yet.<h2 id="span-span-strong-conclusion-strong-span-span">Conclusion</h2>Polygon's Gigagas roadmap has moved from announcement to a long string of shipped mainnet upgrades in about a year, taking peak capacity from roughly 1,000 TPS to around 5,000 TPS through Bhilai, Rio, VEBloP, and a series of gas-limit increases, while Ithaca and earlier forks cut finality to about 5 seconds and added failover protection. Visa has separately added Polygon to its stablecoin settlement program, a real but limited integration. Reaching 100,000 TPS, and Visa's disclosed 65,000 TPS peak capacity, remains a long way off, and validator concentration is a real trade-off tied to the speed gains so far.
