Billionaire venture capitalist @TimDraper is warning that $BTC could become a critical financial lifeline if confidence in the US dollar deteriorates sharply enough to push retailers away from accepting dollar payments altogether.

A Run on the Dollar

Draper's concern centres on a cascading scenario: if enough businesses begin accepting only Bitcoin, ordinary consumers could panic and scramble to acquire it before the window narrows. His advice is concrete. He recommends that families hold enough Bitcoin to cover six months of living expenses, and extends the same guidance to businesses and governments that face potential currency instability. The warning echoes comments he made earlier this year, when he told CoinDesk that there will be a run on fiat banks and a global shift to the Bitcoin standard as trust in governments wanes.

Draper has long pointed to past banking failures as a rehearsal for what a broader currency crisis could look like. He recommends that every company treasury hold Bitcoin alongside fiat in banks, so that when there are bank failures, or if people stop taking fiat, businesses can still make payroll.

A Track Record Worth Scrutinising

Draper's forecasting history adds colour to his latest warning. His long-running $250,000 Bitcoin target was initially attached to 2022 and was later pushed to 2023, 2024, and 2025. Bitcoin ultimately reached an all-time high near $126,000 in October 2025, leaving that forecast well short of the mark.In April 2026, Draper acknowledged that some of those later forecasts "have not been so prescient," but declined to abandon the thesis, instead predicting Bitcoin would reach $250,000 within 18 months, placing the new window around October 2027.

His broader dollar thesis, however, draws on a structural argument that goes beyond price targets. Draper's position is based on currency replacement. He argues that the share of the US dollar will "keep shrinking" due to inflation and debt. That view finds some support in wider market commentary. America's growing debt burden is also seen lifting Bitcoin's status as a dollar hedge, with market participants questioning confidence in fiat currency as interest payments on the national debt approach $1.4 trillion annually, above defence and healthcare spending combined.

For now, mainstream investors remain cautious. Consumer sentiment on Bitcoin's price outlook is subdued, with a majority of respondents across regions expecting Bitcoin to trade lower than current levels by the end of 2026. Whether Draper's dollar-rejection scenario materialises or not, his advice to hold a Bitcoin buffer reflects a growing conversation about what diversification looks like in a world of rising sovereign debt and weakening fiat credibility.
