Consensys said on September 9, 2026 that it plans to separate its consumer wallet business, MetaMask, from its blockchain infrastructure operations, with the split targeted for completion by year-end. The move would split one company into two independently operated firms, and it is a stated plan rather than a closed transaction.

What Consensys plans to separate

Consensys Software Inc. announced plans to split its consumer and institutional businesses into two independently operated companies, according to its September 9 statement. The plan is a proposed restructuring, not a completed change. For related coverage, see Societe Generale Targets Millions With MetaMask Crypto Integration.

Under the plan, Consensys Software Inc. continues as the same legal entity and rebrands as MetaMask, running the wallet platform and consumer products. The company recently expanded that consumer scope with its confirmed MetaMask token plans and a growing product lineup.
MetaMask and the infrastructure business

The Protocols Group and the institutional blockchain infrastructure work become a newly formed company named Consensys, including Linea and infrastructure involving Besu and Teku. This is a separation of MetaMask from the infrastructure business, not a departure of MetaMask from the Consensys name itself, which the wallet company adopts.

MetaMask says it will remain Ethereum-first and pan-ecosystem, while the new Consensys continues Ethereum protocol work and expands institutional infrastructure. The wallet has broadened consumer reach through moves such as native Bitcoin support and its planned Hyperliquid in-wallet trading integration.

The announcement reports more than 100 million MetaMask downloads across approximately 190 countries. These are company-reported figures for downloads and geographic reach, not independently audited active-user counts.

The year-end target for the planned separation

Consensys expects to complete the separation by the end of 2026, per the same announcement. The company describes a planned timetable; completion is not guaranteed by the statement.

Timing stated in the announcement

The plan sets completion by year-end 2026, but the announcement lists no interim deadlines, approvals or transition milestones. Secondary reporting from CryptoSlate on September 10 echoed the same company-continuity structure and the expected end-2026 completion.

Details still to be confirmed about the MetaMask separation

The announcement does not spell out the future ownership or governance arrangements for the two companies beyond the named leadership roles. No detailed ownership allocation, financial terms or approval conditions were established.

Structure and potential operational changes

Any effects on MetaMask users or institutional infrastructure customers remain unconfirmed in the announcement. The plan documents leadership and business scope, not day-to-day operational impact.

The absence of these details reflects the limits of the current announcement, not proof that Consensys has made no further disclosures. The consumer business being separated includes products like the June 30, 2026 MetaMask Money Account, a self-custodial account on Monad powered by mUSD that combines automated earning, spending and trading.
