Badger DAO

Coinbase has moved to bring perpetual stock trading to the United States, submitting a product certification filing to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that signals a push beyond its core spot crypto business.

What Coinbase Is Filing to Launch in the US

The development is a filing, not a live product. Coinbase submitted a product certification to the CFTC, the formal step a registered venue takes before listing a new contract.
Perpetual contracts are derivatives without an expiry date, letting traders hold a position indefinitely rather than rolling futures at settlement. Applied to equities, a perpetual stock product tracks the underlying share price through a continuously traded contract instead of transferring the stock itself. For related coverage, see Robinhood Chain DEX Volume Hits $2 Billion as Trading Jumps 61%.

The move extends Coinbase beyond the spot crypto identity it is best known for. The company has already been broadening its footprint on Base, where Coinbase stock tokens generated $228M in DEX volume, showing appetite for equity-linked exposure inside its ecosystem.

Why Perpetual Stock Trading Would Be a Major Step for Coinbase

Coinbase already runs stock perpetual futures outside the US. It launched stock perpetual futures for non-US users, and a domestic filing would mark an attempt to carry that vertical into its home market.

The US matters because of its scale and its regulatory sensitivity around derivatives. Reporting on the international rollout framed the launch against a fast-growing perpetuals market, underscoring why Coinbase would want a domestic entry point.

The filing fits a broader convergence of crypto-native trading models and traditional assets. That overlap is visible elsewhere too, from TradFi futures surging on crypto exchanges as spot trading slows to Coinbase's own equity-token experiments like the cbHYPE and cbZEC tokens backed by Coinbase custody.

What Traders and the Market Will Watch Next

A filing implies steps remain before any full rollout. Launch timing, eligible users, and the final structure of a US product are not settled by a certification submission alone.

Traders will focus on access, risk, and product design, including who would qualify to trade and how the contracts would be margined. Those details determine whether a US perpetual stock product resembles the non-US version or arrives in a modified form.

Confirmation of a listing date and eligibility rules would be the signal that moves this story from filing to launch. Until then, the CFTC submission stands as an intent to expand, not a live trading venue.
