What Is Coinbase Offering Canadian Traders?
Coinbase has launched cryptocurrency derivatives trading in Canada, giving eligible customers access to perpetual and dated futures linked to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and other digital assets. The products are offered through Coinbase Financial Markets, a futures commission merchant registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The entity operates in Canada under foreign dealer and futures commission merchant exemptions. The initial offering includes 23 crypto perpetual and dated futures, five commodity futures and the Coinbase 50 Index. Coinbase said it is the first major crypto-native platform to provide direct native crypto futures in Canada. The contracts use nano-sized positions, allowing customers to gain derivatives exposure without taking the larger contract sizes commonly associated with traditional futures markets. Eligible users can trade with leverage of up to 10x, increasing both potential returns and losses. Access is restricted to a narrower group of Canadian customers rather than the broader retail market. Eligible participants include investors with at least $5 million in net financial assets, as well as registered investment advisers and dealers.

Why Is Coinbase Targeting Canada?
The launch gives Coinbase another route to expand beyond spot crypto trading while targeting sophisticated and professional investors. Derivatives can generate higher trading activity because customers use them for leverage, hedging and directional strategies without necessarily buying or selling the underlying asset. Canada also provides an established regulated market for digital assets, with several exchanges and investment products already operating under securities oversight. Coinbase can use its existing North American infrastructure while expanding into a segment where access remains more restricted than conventional spot trading. The decision to limit futures access to qualifying investors reduces Coinbase’s initial exposure to retail leverage risk while allowing the company to test demand from wealthier individuals, advisers and professional trading firms. Nano-sized contracts may make the products more flexible for portfolio management. Smaller contract values allow users to adjust exposure more precisely, particularly when hedging positions across several crypto assets rather than relying on large standardized futures contracts.

Coinbase is using regulated derivatives to deepen its Canadian business beyond spot crypto trading. The immediate opportunity is limited to qualified customers, but the launch expands Coinbase’s ability to compete for professional trading volume and institutional flow.

How Are U.S. Trading Platforms Expanding In Canada?
Coinbase is not the only U.S. trading company increasing its crypto exposure in Canada. Webull expanded cryptocurrency trading to Canadian customers earlier this week using Coinbase infrastructure for trading and custody. The addition allows Webull customers to trade digital assets alongside stocks, exchange-traded funds and options. The arrangement also gives Coinbase another distribution channel without requiring users to trade directly through its own consumer platform. Webull cited rising adoption as one reason for entering the market. Crypto ownership in Canada reached 25% this year, up from 10% in 2023, according to research from the Ontario Securities Commission. Robinhood has also expanded into Canada through its $180 million acquisition of WonderFi. The deal gave Robinhood control of Canadian crypto exchanges Bitbuy and Coinsquare, as well as roughly 300,000 funded customers and existing Canadian regulatory approvals. Together, the moves show U.S. platforms competing for Canadian customers through different strategies. Coinbase is adding derivatives directly, Webull is integrating crypto through Coinbase infrastructure, and Robinhood has used an acquisition to secure local licenses, customers and operating businesses.

Can Tighter Oversight Limit Canada’s Crypto Growth?
The expansion by major trading platforms is taking place while Canadian authorities increase scrutiny of other parts of the cryptocurrency market. Ottawa proposed banning crypto ATMs in April over concerns about fraud and money laundering. Lawmakers have also advanced legislation that would prohibit cryptocurrency donations to political parties and candidates. Those measures show that authorities are separating regulated investment and trading activity from crypto services viewed as carrying higher consumer or financial crime risks. For large platforms, that can create both additional compliance costs and an advantage over smaller competitors that lack the resources to meet tougher requirements. Coinbase’s futures launch fits within that environment because access is limited to customers meeting financial or professional eligibility thresholds. That structure allows the exchange to expand higher-risk leveraged products without opening them immediately to the general retail market. The next test will be whether Canadian professional investors generate enough demand to support deeper crypto derivatives liquidity. If volumes grow, Coinbase could gain a larger role in the country’s trading infrastructure while using Canada as another regulated market for its expanding derivatives business.
