According to a new estimate from U.S. Bitcoin financial services firm River, roughly 825,000 people worldwide hold at least one whole Bitcoin (BTC). That figure represents approximately 0.01% of the global population, or about one person in every 10,000.

How River Derived the Estimate

River’s analysis began with approximately 972,000 on-chain addresses containing at least 1 BTC. The firm then excluded addresses managed by companies, governments, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and cryptocurrency exchanges, which can hold assets for millions of users. To account for individual exchange customers who own 1 BTC or more, River assumed that the distribution of Bitcoin holdings among exchange users mirrors the distribution observed on-chain. Based on this methodology, River concluded that the number of individual holders with at least 1 BTC is around 825,000, with a plausible range of 600,000 to 1 million.

Why This Matters for Bitcoin’s Scarcity Narrative

Bitcoin’s supply is capped at 21 million coins, and as of early 2025, over 19 million BTC have been mined. The estimate that fewer than a million individuals control a full coin or more underscores the asset’s scarcity. This concentration has implications for both retail and institutional investors, as well as for Bitcoin’s long-term value proposition. For context, the number of people holding at least 1 BTC is smaller than the population of many mid-sized cities, such as Frankfurt, Germany, or Atlanta, Georgia.

Addresses vs. People: The Challenge of Measuring Bitcoin Ownership

River acknowledged that all figures are estimates, emphasizing that blockchains record addresses, not people. A single individual can control multiple addresses, and a single exchange address can represent the holdings of millions of customers. This inherent ambiguity means the true number of wholecoiners could be higher or lower than the central estimate. Additionally, some coins are permanently lost due to forgotten private keys, which would reduce the effective number of accessible whole coins.

Broader Implications for Adoption and Wealth Distribution

The data highlights how early Bitcoin adoption remains, even after 15 years of existence. While the number of unique wallet addresses has grown steadily, the concentration of significant holdings among a relatively small group suggests that widespread retail participation at the 1 BTC level is still limited. This could be a factor in Bitcoin’s volatility, as large holders (often called “whales”) can influence market movements. For policymakers and financial analysts, such estimates provide a rough gauge of Bitcoin’s demographic reach and the potential for future adoption as infrastructure improves.

Conclusion

River’s estimate that approximately 825,000 individuals hold at least 1 BTC offers a useful, if imperfect, snapshot of Bitcoin’s global footprint. The figure underscores the cryptocurrency’s scarcity and the relatively small number of participants who own a full coin. As the market matures, more precise measurement tools may emerge, but for now, this analysis provides a data-driven perspective on a topic often dominated by anecdote.

FAQs

Q1: How many people hold at least 1 Bitcoin?
River estimates about 825,000 individuals worldwide, with a range of 600,000 to 1 million.

Q2: Why is the estimate uncertain?
Blockchains record addresses, not people. One person can control multiple addresses, and exchange addresses can hold assets for many users, making exact counts difficult.

Q3: What percentage of the global population is that?
Approximately 0.01%, or one person per 10,000, based on a global population of about 8.2 billion.
