He criticized traditional banking for slow settlements and weak security, contrasting this with Bitcoin’s decentralized model.</p><p style="text-align: justify">The network does not have a chief executive, headquarters, or central account, according to Musk’s description. Instead, independent nodes and miners globally verify balances and transactions, operating across jurisdictions without a single point of failure.</p><p style="text-align: justify">This system makes it difficult for authorities to coerce the network through legal or financial threats. Shutting down a server, company, or executive does not impact the overall protocol, and valid balances cannot be erased without the relevant private keys.</p><p style="text-align: justify">However, Musk acknowledged that some pressure points exist outside the protocol. Governments can regulate exchanges, mining companies, custodians, and individuals who interact directly with national currencies.</p><p style="text-align: justify">While the Bitcoin protocol resists centralized intervention, corporate holders like Tesla or SpaceX can choose when to buy, sell, or manage custody of their assets. The company later ended Bitcoin vehicle payments, citing environmental concerns tied to mining.</p><p style="text-align: justify">During 2022, Tesla liquidated approximately 75% of its initial Bitcoin holdings, adding $936 million in cash to its balance sheets. Recent filings show Tesla now holds 11,509 Bitcoin, acquired for $386 million. As of June 2026, SpaceX reported holding 18,712 Bitcoin, unchanged from December 2025. These assets were acquired at a cost basis of $661 million and had a fair value of $1.098 billion at the end of June.
