Ontology, a decentralized AI data infrastructure project, has announced a scheduled mainnet upgrade to version 3.1.2, set to take effect at block height 20,800,000, which is expected to occur at 12:00 a.m. UTC on Aug. 21. The upgrade introduces four Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) features aimed at improving smart contract efficiency and easing the migration of Ethereum-based code.

Key EVM Features Added

The upgrade will incorporate four opcodes and concepts from the latest Ethereum environment into Ontology’s EVM: PUSH0, BASEFEE, MCOPY, and transient storage. These features are part of Ethereum’s ongoing development, particularly the Shanghai and Cancun upgrades, and are designed to optimize contract execution.

PUSH0: Introduces a zero-cost opcode for pushing the value 0 onto the stack, reducing contract size and gas costs for certain operations.

BASEFEE: Allows smart contracts to access the base fee of the current block, enabling more dynamic fee handling and better integration with EIP-1559-style mechanisms.

MCOPY: Provides a more efficient way to copy memory regions, lowering gas consumption for memory-heavy operations.

Transient storage: Adds temporary storage that persists only within a transaction, offering cheaper alternatives for certain use cases like reentrancy locks.

These additions are expected to reduce smart contract size and some computation costs, making it easier for developers to port code written for the latest Ethereum environment to Ontology. For projects building on Ontology, this could mean lower deployment and execution fees, as well as broader compatibility with Ethereum tooling.

Node Operator Action Required

Node operators must update their software to v3.1.2 before the network reaches block height 20,800,000 to apply the upgrade. Failure to update may result in nodes falling out of sync with the upgraded chain, potentially causing disruptions in block validation and transaction processing. The project has urged operators to plan the upgrade ahead of time to avoid network instability.

Why This Matters for the Ecosystem

This upgrade reflects a broader trend among blockchain networks to align more closely with Ethereum’s standards, given Ethereum’s dominant role in decentralized finance and smart contract development. By adopting these features, Ontology aims to reduce friction for developers who want to deploy cross-chain applications, potentially increasing its attractiveness as a platform for AI-related data infrastructure. The move also underscores the importance of maintaining EVM compatibility as a strategic priority for layer-1 networks seeking to tap into the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

Conclusion

The Ontology mainnet upgrade to v3.1.2 is a technical but significant step forward, bringing enhanced EVM capabilities that can lower costs and improve developer experience. With node operators required to update by Aug. 21, the successful implementation will depend on timely coordination across the network. For users and developers, the upgrade signals Ontology’s commitment to staying aligned with Ethereum’s evolving standards, potentially opening new opportunities for cross-chain innovation.

FAQs

Q1: What is the Ontology mainnet upgrade v3.1.2?
The upgrade introduces four Ethereum EVM features—PUSH0, BASEFEE, MCOPY, and transient storage—to improve smart contract efficiency and reduce costs. It is scheduled to activate at block height 20,800,000 on Aug. 21.

Q2: How will the upgrade affect smart contract developers?
Developers will benefit from reduced contract sizes and lower gas costs for certain operations. Additionally, code written for the latest Ethereum environment can be migrated more easily to Ontology, simplifying cross-chain development.

Q3: What do node operators need to do?
Node operators must update their nodes to v3.1.2 before the network reaches block height 20,800,000 to ensure they remain compatible with the upgraded chain. Failure to update could lead to synchronization issues.
