Bitcoin (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BTC</a>) may finally be breaking away from its longstanding correlation with technology stocks.In July, Bitcoin dramatically outperformed the Nasdaq-100, <a href="https://www.21shares.com/en-eu/insights/crypto-market-outlook-july-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">gaining</a> roughly 8% while the index fell nearly 7%.The divergence marked a sharp departure from one of Bitcoin’s most reliable market relationships.Since 2020, Bitcoin has become much more closely <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/openmarkets/economics/2025/Why-Bitcoins-Relationship-with-Equities-Has-Changed.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">correlated</a> with US equities, including the Nasdaq-100, often behaving like higher-beta, risk-on assets.As recently as May, Bitcoin’s 90-day correlation with the Nasdaq stood at 0.89, according to TradingView data <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/05/12/bitcoin-transactions-can-be-monitored-ray-dalio-explains-why-central-banks-won-t-touch-btc" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">cited</a> by CoinDesk. By July 28, its shorter-term 30-day correlation had fallen to 0.43, near the lower end of its five-month range, <a href="https://www.mitrade.com/au/insights/news/live-news/article-3-1941476-20260729" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">according</a> to K33 Research data.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/9509785563c3421596818b1b820d953b.png">Bitcoin ETF inflows flipped positive in July, contributing to favorable price action. ETF flows, leverage, and shifts in BTC supply are giving Bitcoin independent drivers even as broader macro conditions continue to matter.“This disconnect suggests that short-term [equity] correlations are not sufficient to explain performance when bitcoin-specific flows become the dominant driver,” NYDIG <a href="https://www.nydig.com/research/q2-2026-review-leverage-not-spot-demand-is-driving-bitcoin-while-value-and-momentum-buyers-wait" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> in its July 10 quarterly review.<h2 id="bitcoin-has-already-been-moving-on-its-own">Bitcoin Has Already Been Moving on Its Own</h2>Bitcoin’s divergence from equities has been widening for months.In Q2, Bitcoin fell 13.4% while the Nasdaq-100 surged 27.7%, according to NYDIG. ETF inflows returned as selling pressure eased, while tech stocks fell on concerns about AI spending and stretched valuations. Bitcoin gained 7.5% as the Nasdaq-100 fell 6.6%.The split reflects increasingly distinct market drivers. Tech stocks are tied closely to the AI investment cycle, while Bitcoin is drawing demand from ETFs and other crypto-specific buyers.“An improving relative-return gap with low correlation suggests that bitcoin may be catching up for crypto-specific reasons,” Coinbase Institutional <a href="https://www.coinbase.com/fr-fr/institutional/research-insights/research/weekly-market-commentary/weekly-2026-07-24" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> in a July 24 report.<h2 id="etf-buyers-are-returning">ETF Buyers Are Returning</h2>Crucially, spot Bitcoin ETF inflows seem to be recovering.Coinbase Institutional said renewed spot ETF buying helped drive Bitcoin’s July rebound. ETFs recorded five straight inflow sessions for the first time since April.Inflows have strengthened further in August. In the week ending Aug. 7, US spot Bitcoin ETFs <a href="https://en.cryptonomist.ch/2026/08/09/bitcoin-etf-inflows-surging/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">drew</a> in $853.5 million, the strongest weekly inflow since mid-April. Bitfinex <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/07/31/bitcoin-holds-onto-july-gain-as-forced-selling-fuel-was-already-spent-analysts-say" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> much of Bitcoin’s leverage was flushed during the June decline, leaving fewer forced sellers when tech stocks weakened in July.<h2 id="bitcoin-still-cares-about-the-fed">Bitcoin Still Cares About the Fed</h2>Despite weakening correlations with equities, Bitcoin remains highly sensitive to Federal Reserve policy.In July, that worked in BTC’s favor, as softer-than-expected inflation data reduced expectations for further Fed tightening. CoinShares <a href="https://coinshares.com/us/insights/research-data/market-update-17-07-2026/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> weaker CPI and PPI readings helped revive Bitcoin fund inflows and reprice rate expectations.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/fb5276bedd674166ad98cfc22f8e365e.png">Bitcoin has historically been highly responsive to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policy. Coinbase warned that higher Treasury yields and a more hawkish Fed could pressure Bitcoin even as ETF demand improves.“Bitcoin remains a rate-sensitive risk asset rather than a macro hedge,” Jeff Ko, chief analyst at CoinEx, <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/07/15/bitcoin-tops-usd64-000-as-cooling-u-s-inflation-guts-the-fed-rate-hike-trade" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">told</a> CoinDesk.<h2 id="what-would-confirm-a-real-break">What Would Confirm a Real Break?</h2>The clearest test will come during the next broad risk-off move. July’s sell-off was concentrated in AI and semiconductor stocks.If Bitcoin holds up during a wider equity decline, the decoupling case would strengthen.What is increasingly clear, however, is that Bitcoin is more than Big Tech’s volatile younger sibling.“The governing force for bitcoin sits in crypto-native positioning,” Bitfinex Alpha <a href="https://blog.bitfinex.com/bitfinex-alpha/bitcoin-decouples-while-the-range-holds/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> in an Aug. 5 report.
