Four established crypto businesses filed for <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/bankruptcy" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bankruptcy</a> protection or announced plans to close in late July. The news dealt another blow to tokens that have already been languishing for months.On July 15, MVMT Labs, the original developer of the Movement network, <a href="https://www.bankruptcyobserver.com/bankruptcy-case/mvmt-labs" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">filed</a> for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Later that month, BitMEX and BitMart began orderly wind-downs. Storj Labs also filed for Chapter 11 but <a href="https://www.storj.io/blog/storj-announces-voluntary-financial-restructuring-to-resolve-legacy-liabilities-and-position-the-business-for-growth" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> its decentralized storage services would continue during the restructuring.The announcements sent the projects’ tokens tumbling. BitMEX Token (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitmex-token/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BMEX</a>) lost more than 90% after the exchange announced its closure, while BitMart Token (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitmart-token/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BMX</a>) dropped about 58% in 24 hours following BitMart’s announcement. Storj (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/storj/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">STORJ</a>) fell 16% after the bankruptcy filing. Movement (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/movement/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">MOVE</a>), already weakened by earlier turmoil, reached an all-time low, down about 94% from the previous year.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/b91b5cad73ba4f8bae5a32e17d2ac29e.png">Crypto database RootData has identified 116 project closings so far in 2026. RootData <a href="https://www.rootdata.com/about" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">identified</a> more than 100 crypto projects that had closed, filed for bankruptcy, or become inactive by late July.In the wake of a proliferation of new <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/blockchain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">chains</a> and project launches, the crypto market is showing signs of consolidation.“It may be an era of increasingly differentiated winners and losers,” Bitget CEO Gracy Chen <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2026/06/25/whats-next-for-altcoins-in-2026/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">told</a> Forbes in June.<h2 id="crypto-projects-are-running-out-of-room">Crypto Projects Are Running Out of Room</h2>Users and capital are concentrating around a smaller group of exchanges, networks, and applications. Projects that built working products but failed to reach scale are coming under increasing pressure.The trend is visible across major sectors. Binance <a href="https://ambcrypto.com/binance-captures-38-7-of-cex-spot-volume-as-bybit-overtakes-mexc/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">increased</a> its share of spot trading among the 10 largest <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/centralized-exchange-cex" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">centralized exchanges</a> to 38.7% in Q2, even as overall volume fell.Ethereum’s layer-2 market <a href="https://primexbt.com/news/ethereum-layer-2-tvl-slides-to-roughly-5-billion-a-level-last-seen-in-2023/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">shows</a> a similar pattern. By late July, Optimism, Base, and Arbitrum accounted for about 96% of total layer-2 value locked.“The rollup infrastructure market has consolidated around a few dominant layer-2 networks like Base and Arbitrum, which now absorb most of the users and liquidity,” Tiger Research senior analyst Ryan Yoon <a href="https://decrypt.co/368607/syndicate-labs-shuts-down-as-crypto-cuts-and-closures-mount" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">told</a> Decrypt in May.That leaves less room for smaller platforms. Syndicate Labs cited a shrinking rollup market when it <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/article/syndicate-labs-rollup-market-shutdown" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">announced</a> plans to wind down in May.<h2 id="tokens-can-outlive-the-businesses-behind-them">Tokens Can Outlive the Businesses Behind Them</h2>A crypto token can continue trading even after the company or development team behind it stops operating.BitMEX and BitMart offer direct examples. BMEX and BMX provided benefits tied to the exchanges, meaning the wind-downs removed much of the tokens’ original <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/utility-token" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">utility</a>. Yet BMX still had a market capitalization of more than $15 million as of Aug. 7, according to CoinMarketCap data.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/4ab1b4f7e7d942e38c2307dd1039f914.png">BitMart’s planned wind down has sent BMX tumbling. Move Industries, a separate legal entity, continues to develop the Movement network. Storj said its services would remain available during restructuring and proposed giving tokenholders equity in the reorganized company.Both tokens retain substantial market value. MOVE and STORJ had market capitalizations of around $29 million and $19 million, respectively, as of Aug. 7.Still, the abrupt declines in token value highlight a potential disconnect between the incentives facing project teams and tokenholders, particularly when a business restructures or shuts down.“That alignment has proven fragile in stressed scenarios, particularly where token holders lack defined rights or recourse,” Echo Base CEO Roshan Dharia <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/crypto-projects-shut-down-token-models-fail-pressure" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">told</a> Cointelegraph.<h2 id="delistings-remove-a-key-source-of-liquidity">Delistings Remove a Key Source of Liquidity</h2>A project token’s most advanced stage of decline often comes when exchanges begin removing it from trading.For holders, the problem can then shift from falling value to disappearing <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/academy/glossary/liquidity" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">liquidity</a>.Kraken <a href="https://support.kraken.com/articles/asset-delistings-july-2026" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">announced</a> plans in July to delist 21 assets, explaining several had limited or inactive markets. It warned that “liquidation prices may be significantly below recent reference prices and, in some cases, may result in minimal or no proceeds” for assets with insufficient liquidity.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/57b06849987649529f1acff80effc88a.jpg">Kraken announced plans to delist 21 assets in July. Source: CoinMarketCapExchanges remove assets for several reasons, including low demand, compliance concerns, and token migrations. But repeated delistings can deepen an existing decline by reducing volume and widening spreads.<h2 id="the-warning-signs-are-becoming-clearer">The Warning Signs Are Becoming Clearer</h2>No single metric determines when a token has run its course. The strongest warning comes when users leave, revenue dries up, development slows, and exchange support contracts.The shift is putting greater weight on projects with sustained usage and economic activity.“Altcoins are not dead. Narrative-only altcoins are,” CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju <a href="https://beincrypto.com/cryptoquant-ceo-altcoins-survive-2026/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> in June. “The era of making money just by issuing a token is over.”
