ENS DAO has moved toward a temporary veto council following reports of a $20 million attack tied to BonkDAO, framing the two-year measure as an emergency safeguard for its governance process. The ENS DAO veto council is being positioned as a time-bound backstop rather than a permanent change to how the decentralized organization operates.

Why ENS DAO activated a two-year veto council now

The council is being introduced through a governance proposal for a dedicated security council, published on the ENS DAO governance forum. The proposal ties the need for such a body to protecting the DAO against exploit and attack risk.
The trigger cited in this story is a reported $20 million attack associated with BonkDAO, referenced in a post from the Bonk account on X. The specific mechanics and losses of that incident have not been independently verified in the available research, and remain, according to unconfirmed reports, the immediate catalyst for the governance response.
What is clear from the proposal is the scope: a time-bound measure rather than an open-ended one. Limiting the council to two years is meant to keep the intervention temporary while the DAO evaluates whether stronger security controls are warranted long term.
How the ENS DAO veto council is expected to work

A veto council is an oversight body empowered to block or pause specific proposals or actions it deems dangerous, functioning as an emergency backstop rather than a day-to-day decision-maker. It does not typically originate policy; it exists to stop harmful outcomes quickly.

In practice, a body like the one described in the ENS security council proposal would be expected to intervene on proposals or executions that could expose the DAO to exploit-style risk, similar to the attack that reportedly prompted it. The available evidence does not spell out every operational detail, so the exact powers should be read from the proposal itself rather than assumed.

The two-year duration matters because it sets a built-in expiry on centralized intervention. That design choice lets a DAO add rapid-response capability without permanently concentrating power, a recurring tension in on-chain governance that also surfaces in broader debates over coordinated crypto oversight.

What this means for DAO security and governance going forward

The core tradeoff is between decentralization and the ability to act fast. A veto council introduces a measure of centralized control precisely so the DAO can halt an attack in progress, which is the compromise the ENS proposal appears designed to manage.

Because the response is time-bound, other DAOs may watch how ENS handles the balance before adopting similar structures. Temporary oversight bodies are commonly framed as risk-management compromises rather than a retreat from decentralization, echoing how the wider market is weighing rules-based versus discretionary controls in ongoing regulatory clarity debates.

For readers, the governance reaction may matter as much as the attack itself. The proposal is still a social proposal on the ENS forum, so its final form, powers, and activation depend on the outcome of the DAO's own vote.
