Three separate stories are colliding in Polymarket news this week — trader losses, a court defeat for rival Kalshi, and a federal-scale insider trading question. Together, they paint the clearest picture yet of prediction markets under real financial and legal pressure.

Data shared by onchain analyst shows nearly 130,000 of more than 194,000 unique addresses that traded Polymarket's World Cup winner market ended up in the red — roughly 66.7% of all participants. Most losses were small, with over 114,000 addresses losing less than $100 each. But at the extreme end, 43 addresses lost more than $100,000 apiece, totaling over $15 million combined.

Profits followed a similarly lopsided pattern. Nearly 58,000 addresses made small gains under $100, while just 54 addresses earned more than $100,000 each, collectively pulling in over $22 million. The distribution underscores a pattern common across prediction markets generally: a large base of small retail bettors subsidizing a much smaller group of highly profitable, likely more sophisticated traders.

Kalshi News: Washington Court Calls It Illegal Gambling

Kalshi suffered a fresh legal setback this week. According to sports betting attorney Daniel Wallach, the King County Superior Court in Washington State approved the state's preliminary injunction application against Kalshi, ruling that the company's operations in the state constitute illegal gambling under Washington law. Critically, the court also found that the federal Commodity Exchange Act does not preempt the application of state gambling statutes — a direct rejection of the argument Kalshi and Polymarket have both leaned on nationally.
The ruling adds to a growing list of state-level defeats for prediction market platforms. Courts in Nevada, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, and now Washington have increasingly sided with state gambling regulators, even as a Third Circuit panel in New Jersey went the other way. With rulings splitting across circuits, legal observers increasingly expect the preemption question to eventually reach the Supreme Court.

Polymarket Insider Trading Probe and the Kalshi Rivalry

A separate report has drawn fresh scrutiny to trading integrity on Polymarket. Citing data from Polysights, an analysis found that roughly $200 million in bets placed on the platform between January and June 2026 carried characteristics associated with suspected insider trading, concentrated heavily around geopolitical events like the Iran war and the Venezuela situation. Notably, 57% of the wallets that profited from these trades were created within 24 hours of placing them, and some wallets tied to bets on U.S. military action reportedly profited around $1.6 million. About 71% of traceable funds flowing into Iran-related markets reportedly originated from U.S.-regulated crypto exchanges. Polymarket has said it has strengthened its monitoring systems and referred nearly 100 suspicious wallet addresses to law enforcement.
The scrutiny arrives alongside new reporting on just how far the Polymarket-Kalshi rivalry has extended beyond the trading floor. According to sourced reporting, Kalshi's lawyers reportedly briefed federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York about Polymarket's operations months before the FBI raided founder Shayne Coplan's residence in 2024. Separately, before ICE moved to invest in Polymarket, Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour and a16z partner Alex Immerman reportedly contacted ICE executives directly — an approach some sources characterized as an attempt to derail the deal. The two platforms have also repeatedly clashed over CFTC licensing, trademarks, and hiring.

Conclusion

Polymarket news this week spans three fronts at once: a data-backed reality check on World Cup trader outcomes, a state court ruling that deepens Kalshi's legal exposure, and a $200 million insider trading question that puts platform integrity under a brighter spotlight — all while the Polymarket-Kalshi rivalry keeps surfacing in increasingly personal terms.
