Last Updated: September 28, 2026
Bitcoin has no central issuer and no earnings report, so its price is set by what buyers and sellers will pay on exchanges. On September 28, 2026, BTC trades near $82,959, down 2.15% over 24 hours and about 34% below its October 2025 record of $126,080. This guide explains the main forces that push the price in either direction and uses this month’s action as the working example.

Key Takeaways

Bitcoin’s supply is capped at 21 million coins, with about 20.09 million in circulation, so price moves come mostly from changes in demand, sentiment and financial conditions rather than from new issuance.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have become a daily demand signal. US funds took in $134 million on September 25, their seventh straight day of inflows, and about $2.39 billion over the week, according to SoSoValue data.
Interest rates and Treasury yields have become a major driver of short-term direction. The Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16, and the 10-year Treasury yield rose above 5% on September 28, its highest level since 2007.
Regulation can shift expectations quickly. The Senate blocked the CLARITY Act market-structure bill on September 15 with a 49-50 procedural vote that needed 60.
Leverage amplifies short-term swings. Long positions lost about $209 million in 24 hours on September 28.

Supply-Side Factors

Fixed total supply. Only 21 million bitcoin will ever exist, and about 20.09 million are already in circulation. The hard cap is the core of Bitcoin’s scarcity argument and separates it from currencies that central banks can issue in unlimited amounts.
Halving events. Roughly every four years, the reward miners receive per block is cut in half. The most recent halving, in April 2024, reduced it to 3.125 BTC. A halving does not move the price by itself, but lower new issuance against steady or rising demand has historically preceded strong periods in the following months.
Miner behavior. Miners sell part of their rewards to cover electricity and hardware costs. Large miner sales can add short-term selling pressure, especially when profitability falls.

Demand-Side Factors

Retail and institutional buying. More buyers than sellers at a given price pushes it up, and the reverse pushes it down. Since 2024, much of the institutional buying has come through spot ETFs and corporate treasuries rather than direct exchange purchases.
Bitcoin ETF flows. Flows are among the clearest real-time demand signals. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $134 million of net inflows on September 25, their seventh consecutive day, and about $2.39 billion for the week. Flows and price do not always move together: Bitcoin fell 2.15% today after a full week of net buying, and ETFs do not trade on weekends, so Monday’s decline came before any new flow data.
Corporate treasury adoption. Public companies that hold BTC on their balance sheets, a model popularized by Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), add a source of demand that is usually meant as a long-term reserve rather than a short-term trade.

Macroeconomic Factors

Interest rates and Federal Reserve policy. Bitcoin pays no interest, so higher rates and yields raise the opportunity cost of holding it. The Federal Reserve raised its target range by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16, its first hike since July 2023, and 16 of 18 officials projected at least one more, according to CNBC. BeInCrypto reports that traders now price a 68% chance of another hike in October. Policy news works through expectations as well as through the decision itself, which helps explain why Bitcoin rose about 13% after a hike that markets had largely priced in.
Bond yields and oil. The 10-year Treasury yield rose above 5% on September 28. Oil is part of the same story: WTI crude trades near $93 after President Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and higher energy prices feed the inflation worries that keep rate-hike bets alive.
Inflation and the dollar. Bitcoin’s “digital gold” narrative ties part of its appeal to inflation-hedging demand, but the link has been inconsistent. Spot gold fell to around $4,265 on September 28 as yields climbed, and Bitcoin fell alongside it. This week’s August PCE inflation data and September jobs report are the next macro tests.

Regulatory Factors

Regulatory clarity, or the lack of it, moves expectations for exchanges, ETFs and institutional access. The clearest recent example is the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. The House passed the bill 294-134 in July 2025 and the Senate Banking Committee advanced it 15-9 in May 2026, but on September 15 the Senate voted 49-50 on a procedural motion that needed 60 votes to advance. With the bill stalled, the industry is turning to the SEC and CFTC, which are already writing crypto rules. Analysts have argued that altcoins and exchanges have more at stake in the bill than Bitcoin does. For the latest, see Bitcoin News Today and Crypto News Today.

Sentiment and Market Psychology

Fear and greed cycles. Sharp sentiment swings drive overshoots in both directions. Even the gauges disagree: on September 25, CoinMarketCap’s index read Greed at 73 while the CFGI index read Neutral at 55, a gap explained in our look at two Fear and Greed indexes.
Leverage and liquidations. A large share of crypto trading uses borrowed money. When price moves against a leveraged position, forced liquidations add to the move. Long positions lost about $209 million in 24 hours on September 28, roughly double the losses on shorts, according to BeInCrypto.
Narratives. Bitcoin has traded on shifting stories, including “digital gold,” “institutional adoption” and “risk asset.” The dominant story at any moment shapes how traders read the same news.

How These Factors Interact Today

September 28 shows several forces pulling in different directions. Rising yields, Trump’s rejection of Iran’s proposal and $209 million in long liquidations pushed Bitcoin down 2.15% to about $82,959, ending two straight weeks of gains. At the same time, ETF buying continued through Friday, Bitcoin is still up about 13% since the Fed hike one day after the Senate vote on the CLARITY Act failed, and the market stayed relatively steady after the Bitget hack, which cost the exchange about $387.5 million.
Supply is unchanged, demand is holding up, and macro conditions are the swing factor this week.
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single biggest factor affecting Bitcoin’s price?
No single factor dominates for long. In 2026 the leading drivers have rotated between ETF flows, Federal Reserve policy, oil-linked inflation worries and regulation. This month, rising Treasury yields and the Fed’s September 16 rate hike have set the tone, while ETF buying has supported prices. Traders usually weigh several of these at once rather than relying on one.
Does the Bitcoin halving directly cause price increases?
Not directly. The halving cuts the reward miners earn per block in half, and the most recent one, in April 2024, reduced it to 3.125 BTC. That slows new supply, and reduced issuance against steady or rising demand has historically preceded rallies in the following months. It is a gradual supply change, not a price trigger.
Why does Bitcoin move with interest rates and Treasury yields?
Bitcoin pays no interest, so higher rates and yields raise the cost of holding it compared with bonds. The 10-year Treasury yield rose above 5% on September 28, its highest since 2007, and the Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16. Bitcoin still gained about 13% after the hike, which shows that price responds to expectations and flows as well as to the decision.
How much do ETF flows affect Bitcoin’s price?
Spot Bitcoin ETF flows are one of the clearest daily demand signals. US funds took in $134 million on September 25, their seventh straight day of inflows, and $2.39 billion over the week, according to SoSoValue. Flows and price do not always move together: Bitcoin fell 2.15% today after a full week of net buying, and ETFs do not trade on weekends.
Can regulatory news move Bitcoin’s price?
Yes, though the effect varies. The Senate blocked the CLARITY Act on September 15 with a 49-50 vote on a procedural motion that needed 60, and the industry now looks to SEC and CFTC rulemaking instead. Analysts have argued that altcoins and exchanges have more at stake in market-structure legislation than Bitcoin does, which is one reason Bitcoin’s reaction can be muted.
Is Bitcoin’s price manipulated?
Bitcoin trades on dozens of global exchanges with billions of dollars in daily volume, which makes sustained manipulation of the whole market difficult. Short-term moves can still be exaggerated by thin liquidity and concentrated leveraged positions: long positions lost about $209 million in 24 hours on September 28. Regulated ETFs and stricter exchange oversight have also reduced some of the market’s earlier weaknesses
