Kraken now accepts tokenized Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla shares as collateral for futures and margin trading, expanding how users can leverage traditional equity exposure within the crypto exchange.

The update, detailed on Kraken's official blog, means traders can post blockchain-based representations of major U.S. stocks to back leveraged positions. Rather than converting equity holdings into stablecoins or crypto first, users can now put tokenized shares to work directly as margin.
KEY TAKEAWAYS

What changed: Kraken's xStocks tokenized shares of Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla are now eligible as collateral for futures and margin trades.

Assets affected: Three of the most widely held U.S. large-cap stocks, each with strong retail recognition.

Why it matters: Traders gain capital efficiency by using equity exposure to back crypto positions without liquidating stock holdings first.

How Tokenized Shares Work as Collateral on Kraken

Tokenized shares, offered through Kraken's xStocks platform, are blockchain-based instruments that represent exposure to underlying equities. They trade on-chain but track the price of real stocks like Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla. For related coverage, see Kraken Parent Payward Sues PowerTrade Over Alleged $7.2M Asset Misuse.

By accepting these tokens as collateral, Kraken lets traders maintain their equity positions while simultaneously opening leveraged crypto trades. This is a shift from the typical requirement of posting crypto or fiat as margin. The exchange had previously expanded collateral options for tokenized stocks, and this update names specific high-profile equities now eligible.

Why Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla Lead the Rollout

The three companies are among the most actively traded stocks globally, each commanding massive retail investor followings. Apple and Nvidia rank among the largest companies by market capitalization, while Tesla remains one of the most popular names among individual traders.

Kraken's choice to prioritize these names over less familiar equities signals an effort to match user demand. Traders are more likely to already hold tokenized versions of stocks they know, making collateral utility immediately practical rather than theoretical.

The move also aligns with Kraken's broader push into tokenized equities. The exchange has been expanding its derivatives offerings and building out infrastructure that bridges traditional finance products with crypto-native trading.

Capital Efficiency and the Tokenized Asset Trend

For active traders, the primary benefit is capital efficiency. Instead of choosing between holding stock exposure and deploying margin for crypto trades, they can do both simultaneously. This reduces the need to sell one position to fund another.

Kraken's co-CEO has acknowledged that tokenized equities alone will not immediately transform institutional participation. As reported by The Block, the executive noted that tokenized equities will not "open the floodgates" for institutions overnight, suggesting the exchange views this as a gradual buildout rather than a single catalyst.

The announcement fits within a broader acceleration of real-world asset tokenization across crypto platforms. Kraken and its partner Backed have been active in expanding partnerships, and the exchange continues to position itself as a venue where traditional and digital asset markets converge.

Adoption will ultimately depend on how many traders hold xStocks tokens and whether the collateral terms, including haircuts and liquidation thresholds, prove competitive. For now, the addition of Apple, Nvidia, and Tesla gives Kraken one of the more recognizable collateral menus among crypto exchanges offering tokenized equity products.
