Bitcoin (<a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BTC</a>) has fallen more than 50% from its all-time high of around $126,000 late last year, but bulls see this as a temporary setback on a much longer journey — one that could eventually lead BTC to $1 million and beyond.Several paths could push BTC into seven figures, but they all require Bitcoin to play a greatly expanded role in the global financial system. The question is what drives the shift. The likely candidates include institutional adoption, government accumulation, a loss of confidence in fiat money, or some combination of the three.None of these are sure to happen. Even if BTC does eventually reach $1 million, analysts’ timelines vary wildly. Projections range from as low as five years to as many as 40. Others say the day may never come.“Picking price is the easy part. VanEck’s digital assets research head, Matthew Sigel, has <a href="https://www.tradingview.com/news/cointelegraph%3A73f93e48c094b%3A0-vaneck-s-sigel-sees-bitcoin-reaching-1m-within-five-years/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> a $1 million BTC within five years is the firm’s base case. ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood has <a href="https://www.tradingview.com/news/newsbtc%3Af01033497094b%3A0-cathie-wood-doubles-down-on-1-25-million-bitcoin-target/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">put</a> her five-year base case at $750,000, with an upside scenario of $1.25 million.“Half a decade, I think, is possible,” Sigel <a href="https://bitbo.io/news/vaneck-sigel-bitcoin-one-million/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">told</a> CNBC.Others anticipate a longer climb. Pompliano has <a href="https://www.sahmcapital.com/news/content/anthony-pompliano-sees-bitcoin-hitting-1-million-if-the-us-government-does-not-stop-printing-money-2026-05-28" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> Bitcoin could reach $1 million if the US government keeps printing money, though he added it could take up to 40 years.The Bitcoin bull case, however, has plenty of skeptics. Veteran trader Peter Brandt has <a href="https://www.tradingview.com/news/cointelegraph%3A39e7f84f6094b%3A0-bitcoin-will-not-hit-1m-by-2030-says-veteran-trader-peter-brandt/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">argued</a> that $1 million by 2030 is unlikely unless fiat currencies suffer severe damage. MarketWatch columnist Mark Hulbert recently <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/bitcoin-at-1-million-the-math-points-to-a-wildly-different-number-cb835b8a" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">suggested</a> Bitcoin’s long-run value may fall far short of $1 million.The only certainty is that sustained BTC appreciation requires a dramatically broader buyer base. At roughly $60,000 at the time of writing, a move to $1 million would require an approximate 16x gain. It requires ETFs, pensions, wealth managers, corporate treasuries, and younger investors to treat Bitcoin as a scarce store of value.CompaniesMarketCap <a href="https://companiesmarketcap.com/gold/marketcap/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">estimates</a> gold’s market capitalization at around $28 trillion. The American Reserve Modernization Act, <a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/app/details/BILLS-119hr8957ih" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">introduced</a> in May, would establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and require the Bitcoin held in it to be maintained for at least 20 years.The bill is far from law, but it lends credence to the sovereign-Bitcoin thesis. The possibility of sustained government accumulation could change how investors value Bitcoin’s scarcity and pressure other countries to respond.“Because there is a fixed supply of BTC, there is a strategic advantage to being among the first nations to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve,” the White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/establishment-of-the-strategic-bitcoin-reserve-and-united-states-digital-asset-stockpile/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a> in a March 2025 executive order.Sovereign adoption could also come through mining. Bitcoin could reach $1 million if fiat money loses purchasing power faster than expected.JPMorgan calls this the “debasement trade.” The thesis ties Bitcoin’s price performance to signs of worsening macro volatility. If deficits keep rising, central banks return to aggressive easing, or confidence in fiat weakens, Bitcoin could draw demand from investors looking for a scarce alternative.But JPMorgan’s latest <a href="https://www.theblock.co/post/404471/jpmorgan-debasement-trade-retreat-bitcoin-gold" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">commentary</a> also shows the trade can reverse quickly. The bank noted investors have recently pulled back from both Bitcoin and gold as geopolitical tensions eased and ETF outflows increased.“We see broad based retreat of the debasement trade by both retail and institutional investors,” JPMorgan analysts wrote.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/83c5e295912842be9d425bb3e700c7d4.jpg">The “debasement trade” wagers BTC could benefit from a global monetary meltdown. If these trends gain traction, Bitcoin’s price could keep climbing.“As I see it, the base case—that the store-of-value market will continue to grow as it has, and Bitcoin will continue to gain market share as it has—leads you to much, much higher prices than we have today,” Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan <a href="https://experts.bitwiseinvestments.com/cio-memos/how-bitcoin-gets-to-1-million" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">wrote</a>.
