Meta announced Monday that it is rolling out a new set of AI features on Facebook, headlined by an “AI Mode” search function that pulls answers from public posts across its platforms, including Groups and Reels. The move is part of the company’s broader push to catch up in the generative AI race and make its social platforms more engaging and useful for users.

How AI Mode works on Facebook

Instead of scrolling through traditional search results, users can ask questions in plain language and receive synthesized answers based on what people are actually discussing in public posts, Groups, and Reels. Meta AI surfaces these responses by summarizing content from everyday users rather than vetted sources. This follows the quiet launch last month of Forum, a Reddit-style app from Meta that includes an “Ask” tab, which pulls answers from discussions across Facebook Groups.

The approach raises familiar reliability concerns. Because the AI summarizes user-generated content, there is a risk of outdated or misleading information slipping through. Similar concerns have been raised about Google’s own AI Mode, which pulls from Reddit and other public forums.

New editing tools and AI presets

Beyond search, Facebook added editing tools that let users create collage cutouts and transition effects for video montages. A new AI-powered photo preset feature allows users to change their look with different clothes, hairstyles, and accessories. Sports fans, for example, can virtually wear their favorite team jerseys by tapping the “AI Edit” icon in Stories and selecting “Wear It,” or go to their profile picture and choose “Restyle profile picture with AI” and “Wardrobe.”

Recent AI feature additions

These updates add to a growing list of AI features Meta has shipped on Facebook in recent months. In February, the company introduced animated profile pictures that bring still photos to life, adding movements like a wave or a virtual party hat. In March, Meta added an AI feature to Facebook Marketplace that automatically replies to buyer messages on sellers’ behalf. Earlier this month, Facebook launched an AI assistant for creators that offers personalized suggestions, including optimal posting times and summaries of audience comments, based on a creator’s content and performance history.

Broader strategy and subscription plans

Taken together, the flurry of releases points to a broader strategy: Meta wants Facebook’s AI tools to make the platform stickier and more useful, while also diversifying how it makes money. Alongside these feature rollouts, the company recently launched global subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, starting at $3.99 a month, that unlock additional features. More AI-related subscription tiers are reportedly on the way.

The push comes as Meta faces increasing competition from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in the generative AI space, and as it seeks to maintain user engagement amid shifting social media trends.

Conclusion

Meta’s AI Mode and accompanying features represent a significant shift in how Facebook users search for and interact with content. While the tools offer convenience and personalization, their reliance on user-generated summaries raises questions about information reliability. The company’s broader strategy of integrating AI across its platforms and introducing subscription tiers signals a long-term bet on AI as a driver of both user engagement and revenue.
